TOPIC: ARGUMENT117 - The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondentsto a recent survey reported that they are required to take more workhome with them from the workplace than they were in the past. SinceValu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supplydepartments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-hometrend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home officemachines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, andfax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such aspaper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supplydepartments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

In this argument the arguer attempts to convince us that the newly increase stock of office supplies will get an eminentprofit raise for Valu-Mart stores. To substantiate this conclusion, theauthor illustrate a survey and make the assumption to support hispoint. While this argument has some merits, several conspicuous flawsseriously undermine the line of reasoning.
In the first place, severalsuspicious illustrations draw my attention which makes the result thesurvey unwarranted. Whether the attendees of the survey are largeenough in all realms of work? The authority who takes the survey is notmentioned which may not be authorized enough这句没必要,调查的可信度只与被调查者的数量,代表性,调查题目的设置公平与否有关,与谁做调查是无关的. More important, thearguer does not mention the total number of the attendee and thepercentage of the respondents who answered the survey(不是70%多吗?). If only a smallscale of attendee respond to this survey, the result is, obviously, unconvincing. In one word, the arguer makes a hasty generalization inthis survey.
Even assuming that the result of thissurvey is somewhat acceptable, the reason of the manager's plan thedetail course in the application is lack of supportive material whichmakes his plan groundless. The impressive sales in its office-supplydoes not forecast a soaring situation in the next few years, however,on the contrast, this may indicate that the office-supply commoditiesare, for a long time, lack of attraction不错. More importantly, the listedcommodities are not under serious data from the market and otherinstruments are not mention. How about the notebook, which is the vitalthing in the office(notebook写的多余了,要理解stock of office supplies such aspaper, pens, and staplers中such as的意思)? Without rule out these elements, the course ofmanager's application is somewhat underestimated.被调查的人未必关于办公用品,也许是包装等简单工作带回家做,而不是卖东西。不能证明办公用品在家庭可以做的好生意,员工对这决定有反对情绪吗?多少顾客愿意在下班时间购买这些办公用品呢?
Even assuming that the application issomewhat effective, the author draws a oversimplified conclusion. Thehome office commodity may not have a nice selling record. Even admitthat the selling is satisfactory, the profit of these commodities are not stated. For a mart store, a bunch of other things like the costumegarmentand food may have a higher profit. Even with a better sellingcondition, office-supply department might not be the most profitablecomponent. 这段理由充分
In summary, this argument is notpersuasive as it stands. To make it logically acceptable, the authormust illustrate that the result of the survey is reasonable, thecommodities of office-supply department is suitable and the profit ofhome office product is higher than others.
总体思路把握正确:1、调查的可信度,调查是否与办公用品相关,可否作为trend来利用?
2、办公用品的销量不佳有无其他原因
3、办公用品的利润如何,能否成为最盈利的有待怀疑
