TOPIC: ARGUMENT117 - The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

In this argument the arguer attempts to convince us that the newly increase stock of office supplies will get an eminent profit raise for Valu-Mart stores. To substantiate this conclusion, the author illustrate a survey and make the assumption to support his point. While this argument has some merits, several conspicuous flaws seriously undermine the line of reasoning.

In the first place, several suspicious illustrations draw my attention which makes the result the survey unwarranted. Whether the attendees of the survey are large enough in all realms of work? The authority who takes the survey is not mentioned which may not be authorized enough. More important, the arguer does not mention the total number of the attendee and the percentage of the respondents who answered the survey. If only a small scale of attendee respond to this survey, the result is, obviously, unconvincing. In on word, the arguer makes a hasty generalization in this survey.

Even assuming that the result of this survey is somewhat acceptable, the reason of the manager's plan the detail course in the application is lack of supportive material which makes his plan groundless. The impressive sales in its office-supply does not forecast a soaring situation in the next few years, however, on the contrast, this may indicate that the office-supply commodities are, for a long time, lack of attraction. More importantly, the listed commodities are not under serious data from the market and other instruments are not mention. How about the notebook, which is the vital thing in the office? Without rule out these elements, the course of manager's application is somewhat underestimated.

Even assuming that the application is somewhat effective, the author draws a oversimplified conclusion. The home office commodity may not have a nice selling record. Even admit that the selling is satisfactory, the profit of these commodities are not stated. For a mart store, a bunch of other things like the costumegarment and food may have a higher profit. Even with a better selling condition, office-supply department might not be the most profitable component.

In summary, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it logically acceptable, the author must illustrate that the result of the survey is reasonable, the commodities of office-supply department is suitable and the profit of home office product is higher than others.
