I disagree with the assertion because the writer ignores the fact that the goal of education is to not only facilitate the students with expertise of their future careers but also with the ability to tell the right from the wrong, distinguish truth from falsehood and cooperate with others. Education purely designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student tends to lead us to the dilemma that many students are well equipped with professional knowledge but could not survive in the society where many essential skills are needed just as I mentioned before. There used to be some excellent scientistsworking hard on their experiments and researches but failed to publish their discovries for lacking the essential skills to express ideas clearly and logically .Perhaps that is why the ETS adds the analytical writing to GRE Test and testify every student taking the exam despite of their different majors. So feeding the students with the knowledge and skills they are interested in can only be effective on the ground of the master of indispensable essential knowledge and skills. Moreover, we all know that an infant is not born with some particular interest; they develop a specific one after receiving an all-rounded but relatively simple education. For children at this age, it is ridiculous to give them the education covering their specific interests or needs. What the education should cover is some commonsense and basic skills which help them to know more about the wonderful world, communicate with others, build up some good habits and develop an interest benefiting both themselves and the society. Even for students in middle school or high school, who have obtained essential knowledge and ready to embark on the further study of expertise, education should still cover some life-long skills like cooperation as long as knowledge designed on the interests or needs. From all the discussion above, we can conclude that education only designed on individual needs and interests is not a feasible nor effective way to adopt. So is there a better way of education? The most famous teacher Confuse, living in the ancient china about 2000 years ago, had given us a clue for that. One of Confuse’s students, who was brave but petulant, asked him: “Whenever I come up with an idea should I put it into practice immediately?” “No, you should ask your father and elder brothers for advice and think it over and over again before implement,” answered Confuse. Another student who was modest and discreet but always reluctant to make a decision asked the same question. “Yes, you should put it into practice right away,” Confuse answered. Different answers were given on the same question for different students, Confuse provided different solutions to help his students develop a reasonable decision-making process based on their unique characters rather than blindly offering the relative knowledge about what they was about to do. The concept of education based on character is more comprehensive and effective than that designed for needs or interests. It sets higher requirements for teachers to look into individual students’ characters and then come up with unique solution to guide the students to find out what they are lack to survive or succeed in the society.
