Issue 99 "In any realm of life—whether academic, social, business, or political—the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."
I agree with the speaker insofar as that a practical point of view can provide us some chances to survive in the short term. However, it is important not to underestimate the comparative value of idealism. Examples from the academic, social, business and political field aptly illustrate my caveat.
Take it to academics firstly, the ever-increasing number of students majoring in computer science, business and laws is a strong evidence that more and more educatees are learning for the purpose of securing lucrative jobs immediately upon graduation. Meanwhile, the amount of time spent in art-learning is much less than that allocated to English and Mathematics. Admittedly, practicality seems to be the litmus test for education today, yet many college students are pursuing what they find they are really interested in. Many excellent Asian students fly to America to study natural science every year which ostensibly has little pragmatic value. Even those “pragmatic ” students mentioned above are not all drived by practicality. Many of them are interested in their curriculum, and practicality is just the catalyst to promote such interest.
In considering the political world it might be more tempting to agree with the speaker. What a politician cares most is to be elected and reelected. However, if we assume that performing the obligation to their voters and country is a kind of idealism, then we have to admit that the politicians who survived in the long term in a democratic society must be the ones who are holding an idealistic point of view. Those who betray their constituency for their own interest are doomed for failure. Considering one of America’s former president Nixon’s active role in the Watergate cover-up. His behavior demonstrated a concern for self-interest above the broader interests of the democratic system that granted his political authority in the first place, and finally led to his forfeiture of it.
Finally, when it comes to the business realm, we should also avoid affording the speaker’s claim greater merit than it deserves. To ensure profit maximization, which is the ultimate goal of all companies, its executive must also take idealistic point of view, since our society is imposing more and more obligations on businesses, like protect consumers, preserve the natural environment, promote education, and help alleviate society's problems. If a company failed to carry out any of these actions, it might suffer from a lot of condemnation, losing its supporters and even a poor reputation. All of which might distract the company from the way to its profit maximization.
In short, pragmatic behavior indeed guarantees survival in short term, but in order to ensure long-term success in any endeavor, idealism is also needed.
