Since the era of revolutionary industry, technology along with the civilization has been developed significantly, which result in not only more social prosperous，but also a series of moral and ethics problems. While there’s no doubt that technology influence our society significantly, there's doubt as to whether it also largely decided our social customs and ethic.

For one thing, technology serves as catalysts in changing the value system of the whole society. A case in point is the Internet. Just as what we have witnessed all these decades, with the prevalence of internet and the development of revolutionary of computerization, computer, which can not only deal with all kinds of complex tasks, but also facilitate the lifestyle of our human being, such as surfing the internet, making virtual friends, playing video games with strangers on line, or even involving in a virtual marriage, all of which change our life as well as changed our mind. This illustrates the point that custom and ethics of our society does influenced tremendously by advanced technology.

For another thing, however, I would still insist that, it is people rather than technology that should be responsible for all these change of ethic and custom of our society.  Faraway from the superficial impression that technology determined our social custom and ethic, the fact is that, technology is just a tool, and the key point lies in the people who take advantage of it. For instance, with the development of medical technology and medical apparatus, euthanasia, abortion, human cloning, all these are phenomenon contribute in damaging social custom and ethic.  A careful examine of them, however, we would find that they are actually objected by most of people who in favor of the morality and decency. So it is not technology but rather human beings put themselves in this embarrass dilemma. Not a stagnancy, custom and ethics rather are involving one which could not have been ultimate perfect.


Finally, question comes out, how all of these custom and ethics come into being? Since they are not determined or even influenced by technology. I my opinion, customs and ethics are handed down generation to generation determined by the characteristic of the nation.  In ancient society, our pristine ancestors had to cooperate with each other to prey on wild animals; otherwise, they will suffer from starvation. So teamwork, a kind of virtue comes into being.  And when it comes to the distribution of the food obtained from hunting, they will tend to allocate more food to elders and children while allot less amount to the adult, in which we learn the origin of respecting and caring for the youth. Later on, when people barter what they can not consume for necessities, and then equity, a trading rule appeared. From this, we can safely draw the conclusion that the value system of our society is ultimately determined by the history and characteristic of this nation, not advancement of technology.

We may define the technology as a catalyst when the customs and ethics are the reagent. Catalysts can only accelerate or decelerate the whole process of reaction, not determine.
