Education is one of the key words of our time. Convinced the importance of education, modern society has invested in institution of learning to get back the interest in the form of a large group of enlightened young men and women who are potential leaders. Unfortunately, from my observations, many serious problems exist in current Chinese educational system and will necessarily hinder the progress of the society in the future.
First of all, the education of children indeed determines the direction of society in the future. It may be illustrated by comparing the position of the nation with that of a private business enterprise. In a business, if everyone could be trained properly to take his responsibility and to exercise his initiative as falls within his sphere, the enterprise will be prosperous. It is precisely the same with the nation. To the extent that every child could share in the knowledge which was accumulated by the happy few during the past centuries and develop his ability under the direction of self-improvement as well as human being's mutual profits, our society can be prosperous in the long term. By contrast, if the child are directed by having a commitment to a mean ambition and encouraged to be an anxious social climbers, what would our future community be like? Obviously it will become a planet which is full of abject and ignoble suburban creatures.
Additionally, we have to admit that, in modern China, educators lay more stress on rote rather than the cultivation of creativity. Let's review the history of our education. It is easy to find out that the whole educational system rotates round different types of tests. Students in school only care for their grades and position of the rank. Nobody strives continually to think about the purpose of the study and education. Besides, the cultivation of creativity is not a business that can be undertaken in a day or swiftly improvised by a mere command of the will. The seeds must be rightly chosen, they must fall on good ground, and they must be sedulously attended, if the vivifying fruits are to be at hand when needed. Unfortunately, the good ground and sedulously attention are not available in China. The only solution to change the whole atmosphere in education is to change traditional stereotypes imposed by ourselves.
Furthermore, to be worse, more students are now encouraged to attend variant competitions in order that they can get a promise to enter a good university without any test. Nearly all competition practised nowadays are competitive. You take part in to win and the competition has little meaning unless you do your utmost to win. The significant thing is not the contest itself, but the attitude of players and behind the players, the parents and community who work themselves into furies over these absurd contests and seriously believe they are the tests of personal and national virtue.
In the final analysis, we attempt to shape our society by shaping the beliefs and behaviors of our children although many defects existing in educational system. To carry out the real objective of education, we need to change our old philosophy which had controlled us for a long time.
