"Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education."




Does competition for high grades seriously limit the equality of learning at all levels of education? In my view, I fundamentally agree that crazy competition for high grades would undermine the quality of learning. However, for the fundamental education before the college education such as primary school and middle school, the moderate competition for high grades is necessary for students to build up their own system of knowledge and world concept.

To begin with, I concede that crazy competition for high grades would limit the quality of learning and even resort the original purpose of education, which is to cultivate individuals with healthy personality. At first, competition for high grades blindly would make students only focus their attention on the knowledge that is included in the examination and overlook the other useful and even critical knowledge. As for me, I used to learn English only for exam, thus I just learn how to read and answer the question and let alone the other aspect of learning English such as oral English, listening and writing. When attending some international academic conferences, I come to understand how poor my oral English and listening, which heavily influence the communication with others in the area the academic. As these abilities are rather important for me, I have only spare much more time to relearn the knowledge. In addition, pursuing high grades blindly would confine students only to their study so that these students fail to foster their other abilities such as spirit of corporation. As we know, we now live in a world that its jobs develop toward specialization, lacking the spirit of corporation, no matter how strong an individual possesses all kinds of the abilities, one cannot reach to the final success.

On the other hand, we should see that the moderate competition for high grades is to some extent required for the students during the fundamental education such as primary school and middle school. Generally speaking, lacking a rudimental ability of self-government and a fundamental world view, children often cannot study alone and analyze the complexity of some problem. So it is important that competition for high grades should be encouraged by the teachers to boost their enthusiasm for learning. For instance, as a result of hard study, the gain of high grades would improve the students' confidence for learning and encourage him to continue studying hard. Further more, students who can get high grades by means of hard studying and competition for high grades are more likely to obtain the praise from teachers, which is rather conductive to the enthusiasm for learning. Moreover, let us Imagine what would happen if schools in all levels of education cancel the examination for all the subjects. Considering the lively nature of children and youngsters, it is indubitable that most of the primacy students would pay little attention to the important fundamental subjects such as math, Chinese and English unless they are actually interested in them. Nonetheless, lacking grasping these subjects firmly, a individual cannot develop his career any further.

Maybe competition for grades itself has not much problem, because the faith that one wants to be better or best in his study is also very crucial for his further success ,either in academic research or in the work. It is possible that the real problem lies in the criterion that differentiates which answer is right or wrong. However, often we do not have the so-called right answer to some objective problem. As the so-called right answer to a certain question is fixed and students should answer the objective problem like this or that, our creativity and ability of suspect is really depressed.
