The speaker alleges that history provides little guidance for living in the present. I concede insofar as the modern society is more complex than ever before. However, in my point of view, it is clear that the modern society is evaluating from the past step by step, thereby leaving the unbroken linkage between the present and the past. Having a good understanding of the past can give an important guidance for individuals to know and improve themselves in morality and ethics. Also, in the scientific field, examining the peer-reviewed analysis about the historical flaws can prevent human being from repeating the similar mistakes.

To begin with, even that we encounter a unprecedented era, at which our daily life becomes more convenient due to the utilities of modern technologies, and the frequency of the change become higher according to fiercer and fiercer competition in various fields, the morality plays a perpetual role in society either during the old days or at the present. History is replete with stories that reveal how people learn to be human. For instance, the insistence and encourage of Thomas Edison, who invented the light bulb after he failed 1800 times or so, enlightened all the nation at that time. And so is  it nowadays. To achieve the success, one should not go without such persistence and passion. Learning from the example of Thomas Edison, people might cultivate such good ethic while dealing with tough problems, thus never give up easily.

On other hand, the scientific development is mostly based on the former's theory. Consider the "string" theory establishment and the finding of the quark. Not only does this theory reconcile the discrepancy between the quantum and wave theory of physics, but also it posits the existence of an even more fundamental, and universal, unit of matter called the quark. Based on the scientific knowledge that all matter is comprised of atoms, which are further comprised of protons, neutrons and electrons, scientists discovered the more basic unit of matter-that is the quark. Without the debate between quantum theory and wave theory, that would be not the birth of the "string" theory, even though the former two are not correct in demonstrating the physical characters of matter. Therefore, not every theory of the past is right, yet all the theories can help to establish a new theory referred to the former ones, no matter right or wrong.

In addition, with regard to the flaws in the past, the similar wrong doings or ignorance might be little repeated again. For instance, recognized that unduly emitting the carbon dioxide gas causes the greenhouse effect, most countries are immediately taking measures to limit the greenhouse gas emitting, especially the developing countries, which have learned the lesson of the developing countries, which have learned the lesson of the developed countries about the developmental model, seeking the new efficient means to develop harmonious with nature. Again, went out of the deep grieves of "911" ,the government established a better safety protecting system for avoiding the country to be attacked again. And such terrible things don't happen once more until now.

In the final analysis, we could not overlook the history, especially in morality and science, since history can inspire, inform, guide, and nurture in our everyday life. And we should focus our attention on extracting the helpful aspects from the past for our bright future.
