Argument166 :The following appeared in a local newspaper.
"People should not be misled by the advertising competition between Coldex and Cold-Away, both popular over-the-counter cold medications that anyone can purchase without a doctor's prescription. Each brand is accusing the other of causing some well-known, unwanted side effect: Coldex is known to contribute to existing high blood pressure and Cold-Away is known to cause drowsiness. But the choice should be clear for most health-conscious people: Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals than is Coldex. Clearly, Cold-Away is more effective."

In this argument, the author concludes that Cold-Away is more effective than Coldex. To support his conclusion, the author cites that Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals than is Coldex side effects of the two medicines: Coldexo contributes to existing high blood pressure while Cold-Away causes drowsiness. At the same time, the author advises people not to be misled by the advertising competition between Coldex and Cold-Away. However, the author’s conclusion is not well-reasoned, thus is incredible.
Firstly, there is not any sound medical research shows that Cold-Away is more effective than Coldex. It requires controlled experiment in clinic to judge the effect of medicine; however, we are not informed any information about medical study.
Secondly, longer time on the market is not necessarily indicated that Cold-Away is better than Coldex. Coldex is new and it is entirely possible that it was produced as technology developed and breakthrough in the medical history was made. Nor the more used in hospital can indicate that Cold-Away is better. Many factors can influence the adoption of hospitals, such as business sale promotion, the kind of disease that most patients suffered in the hospital, the price of the medicine etc. Furthermore, both Coldex and Cold-Away are over-the-counter cold medicines, that is to say, the suggestion from professional doctor is not the best.
The final point is the side effect of the two medicines. Coldex contribute to existing high blood pressure and Cold-Away cause drowsiness. Therefore, the use of coldex may be restricted as Coldex’s side effect seems more serious than Cold-Away for most people. Nevertheless, for cold, the curative effect of Coldex is likely better than Cold-Away, especially for people without risk at high blood pressure.
To sum up, the conclusion relies on unreliable reasons which render it unconvincing. To better asses the effect of the two medicines, I need to know more details about Coldex and Cold-Away. At the same time, the author should rule out other possibilities that influence the adoption of hospitals.
