Data:2/11/2008 Time: N/A Word:621 To find lasting solutions to our endured problems as well as to mitigate our sufferings both in physical and mental, we turn more and more to the benefits of technology whose inherent nature aims at providing increasing leisure time for us-breadwinners or householders. Paradoxically, while our technology has experience an unprecedented booming while it really bring something exact what it has promised or guaranteed; instead our daily life is becoming ‘unprecedented’ rushed and frantic. From my point of view, this paradox is due to some innate deficiency in so-called technology as discussed below. Like the heroes in science fictional movies or novels such as the Batman or the great spy--007 ?We are equipped with more and more advanced instruments regardless of our willingness. In retrospect of our daily life, at any circumstances, you will find so much high- tech equipments which you may have absorbed even in your subconscious, by which I mean you have take them into a part of life. A motorbike or a car which transports us from our home to office, a cellular phone which can ensure your connecting which the world, a computer to which you relegate most of your calculating works, all these mentioned above attribute a lot to ensure the basic elements of so-called modern life—the elements include mobility, automation and convenience to information. However, such convenience is at a price: the greater our mobility, the more our destinations each day; the more time-saving facilities we use, the more activities we try to attend each day; with more convenient access to information, we try to assimilate more of it each day. Nowadays we are forced to do more by the superiors, the competitors, or even by ourselves. Furthermore, advancement of technology, on an individual level, can also lead some personal problems such as unemployment, resentment, high suicide rate, even anti-social behaviors. As the speed of our accumulating knowledge is becoming higher and higher, the requirements for employees has greatly improved, which consequently cause many fall-behind employees, for these or those reasons, out of work. What is more, even qualified ones are still at the edge of being dismissed in the face of the wide use of automation systems which needs fewer and fewer operators while fulfilling the task used to be assigned to ten or more employees.
Such by products by technological advancement might cause, on the societal level, even more undesirable consequences which retort the human nature and value system. Admittedly, most of progress in technology is mainly to sever our industry which only seeks the maximizing the profits while minimizing the cost regardless of or pay litter attention to the benefits of our society. As the profit-driven dominate most of our social activities, we-social beings, are becoming more pragmatic and practically than ever before, from pure devoted workers to social climbers who cherish mean ambitions or love of comfort. This change also pushes our life to an undesirable stage, full of suspicion but lack of trust, more emphasis on materials but less focused on our mental needs. For that matter, our society loses its stability and harmony; let alone ensures our conformity and joys. In sum, to some extent the advancement of technology really play a positive role in releasing human burden, such as doing repetitive works and performing in dangerous and harmful conditions. However, if the technological progress lose its direction to advance—the direction to focus more on human need not business requirements, on long-term social pressing problems not short-sighted individual interest, on coordinating with other progress not being confined to its own advancement, what it brings to us is not a the improvement in quality of life, yet a obstacle to the progress of the society. |
