TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition andmodernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS:434 TIME: 50:53 DATE: 2008-2-21
Should we choose between tradition andmodernization just because they are incompatible as the author asserts? In myopinion, tradition and modernization are all indispensable parts in our dailylife, and it is unmeaning to see them as ambivalence, therefore to overstate oroverlook each of them is infeasible. All my perspectives will be presented asfollowed.
First, although human being has entered anew era which is replete with modern things, it does not mean we should deserttradition including traditional life styles and traditional holidays and soforth. On the contrary, it is necessary or even desirable for people to placeenough emphasis on the traditions, which represent culture and history. First, traditionsare so precious that they will serve to build a harmonious and steady society-byconforming to traditions, many virtues can be saved. Also, traditions canrepresent a country, for instance, the red color and dragon have become thesymbol of China.Because of traditions, citizens of a country develop a strong sense of cultureand self identity, which serve to unite a country. For example, the Moon Festival, one of the most important traditions in China, is the time when all membersof a family enjoy a reunion.
Second, in many aspects, tradition andmodernization actually accelerate the development of our society by theirefforts together. A simple example will serve to illustrate this point. With thewidely use of computer and Internet, now students become much more familiar tothese high technology. Then a new question comes, which is the best way forstudents to learn, by conforming to traditional style-like studying textbooksin classrooms-or be selecting modern way-like study on Internet? The answer isthat each learning method should not be deserted: traditional learning stylewill promote the communication between students and teachers, while modernlearning method will surely enlarge students' horizon, thus make their learningeffective. From this aspect, we can conclude that tradition and modernizationcannot simply be seen as ambivalence.
Admittedly, the new world calls for us toaccept more and more modern things, and otherwise we will run the risk of droppingbehind this rapidly developing era. For example, we have been accustomed tosnack like KFC, and we have seen television and computer as the indispensableparts in our life, etc. Therefore just conforming to traditional life stylewill make people blankness.
In conclusion, I fundamentally disagreewith the conclusion that tradition and modernization are incompatible. In fact, they all contribute directly to the development of society. Moreover, modernization can be seen as an extension of tradition or new interaction of tradition. |
