The speaker contends that we have long forgotten the groups of people, who actually make the most significant events and trends in history, and concentrate too much on these famous individuals. I do agree with the speaker. Though the study of famous ones is necessary, to better understand the history, we must place more emphasis on individuals.
For better understanding of history, we have to be more familiar with the public who live in that period, not only what the famous does, but what the actual situation and circumstance of the society is. Nevertheless, why some few are called famous, is just because they are different from public in some aspects. The action of one or two wildly known person can not incarnate the common behaviors of public of that time. So, if we only know what Einstein or Beethoven did, but no other common person in that time, I have to say that we are still not familiar with the period of history well.
No one can deny the crucial contribution made by public to push the wheel of history forward. History is not made by certain people. The feudality took the place of the slavery, the feudality are replaced by the capitalism. When looking deep into the trend of evolution of society, we will find that the uptrend is continuing and would not be decided by few people. The history is made by public.
In addition, I also believe that nowadays, so many people play so much emphasis on these few famous persons, is for profits. No matter the historians, or the movie directors, or some writers, what they are attempting to do is not only telling us a period of history, but also for two more important reasons as followed. On one hand, they are figuring a good example, a example that should be imitated and study. On another hand, drew public’s attention and pursue more profits. Just think about most of the so-called big movies, especially made in Hollywood, some of which usually take billions of dollars to describe certain hero in history. Why do they do that? The reason will be understandable if you know that they could earn more money by these movies. Is their real purpose to tell us the history? I doubt it. And for more profits, the history shown in the movies is often not the one it was in real history.
However, these few persons are also part of the history, and therefore they should not be neglect when we study the history. Although I do not believe that hero can save the world, I also admit that these persons are more contributive than most of public. And I also think, setting good example to learn for public is good and necessary.
In summary, history is made only by these few famous persons, but more, by public. So for a better understanding of history, we should be familiar with both parts, and no matter on which one we concentrate too much, we will not see the whole picture of that period of history.
