Issue 38. "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

WORDS:643  TIME:90min  DATE:26/02/2008

Fransis Bacon, a British philosopher, once said, "History make men wise; poem witty; the mathemtics subtle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend." No matter history, poem, mathemtics, philosophy, moral, logic or rhetoric, are mostly learned in books, rather than on television. Therefore, I strongly disagree with the opinion in the topic.

To begin with, reading books still is the primary studying form in schools. What pupils are told to do after getting up in the morning is usually to read aloud poems and words, instead of watching TV; it is never strange that new books make students excited at the beginning of a new semester; what's more, we cannot deny that the favorite TV programs for students are nothing but cartoon shows and sports programs. According to the idea of the author, since people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books, watching television should at least be placed on a equally significant status, but then what will happen? Students can choose to read books or watch TV in classrooms; they would select to buy new books or new video records at the start of new semester; they should be free from preventions or blames while spending all the spare time watching cartoon shows. Can our society bear to accept such a negative condition? Undoubtedly parents will be not only worried but also angry. Now that the suppose along the author's logic thinking will never do, we cannot accept his or her opinion.

In addition, many kinds of knowledge cannot be applied through television. Even if educational programs is aiming at providing audiences useful and interesting knowledges, they cannot cover areas which is much too complicated or bald. Discovery is a case in point. A recent stat. powered by Discovery.com indicates that in the past year of 2007, the knowledge fields Discovery program covered can be classified into four large sorts - nature, society, literature and engineering. The most preferential subject is geography from nature field, weighing 37.85% of all mounts of programs, while field of engineering covered only 4.72% in all. For a exact subject in engineering, the percentage is even smaller and it is not strange that some areas has never been covered. Therefore, toward a student majoring at electric or mapping or a staff working in electricity company or mapping institute, how many informations can they attain from the famous educational TV program - Discovery, not to mention other programs flooding the golden time, such as soap opera, football matches and advertisements. Since TV stations rely on the income of advertisements, which are inevitablely put along the welcome programs. It follows that programs makers cannot put the interest of most audiences on the side. Actually, except for those professional people, common people just want to get some basic easy-understood knowledges of popular subjects.

However, admittedly, nowadays watching television indeed becomes a way to get information, which may contribute to the public learning. To illustrate, I want to take the stock market in China as a example. From the year of 2005, when the bull market came back, millions of common people join the force of stockholders. The primary informations they get are from TV programs, for nearly every station has not only begun to show the instant condition of stock markets but also strengthen the extent of attention of stock markets, such as setting individual financial programs, increasing the amounts of reports about stock markets.

In sum, although nowadays watching television has become a way to get information, its status still is far away from that of reading books, because reading books is the primary studying form yet in schools, as well as the knowledge TV programs supply is limited. Therefore, I think reading books is as important as it once was and people still learn mostly by reading books."

Now that the suppose along the author's logic thinking will never do, we cannot accept his or her opinion.
