TOPIC: ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

Conclusion, from the author's assertion, which is that Elm City University should give Professor Thomas a salary raise and a promotion to keep her, seems reasonable, but at the second glance, there are some flaws for several reasons.
First of all, the fact of his big class can not demonstrate she is popular. As a popular teacher, her popularity depends on her ability of instruction and whether her class is prefer by her students, but the size of class. Some teachers give high scores or leave little homework so that their class is always big and this will lead to a decline of the qualities of students.
Secondly, the evidence that the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded his salary in each of the last two years, is not eloquent because of lacking extra information. If she majors in a hot issue, which are always supported by the nation, this statement is meaningless to her ability of research. Moreover, it is high possible that it is some friends who support her or others' programme.
Additionally, even if she is good at teaching and research, we still think again about whether she will be a good manager if give her a promotion. Manager is different from professor, and we also should take her interesting into account.
If she focus on her research and teaching job and does not want to be disturbed by other boring things, we'd better keep her position still.
At last, the author fails to provide her own attitude about this problem, which plays a vital role in this argument. As a excellent researcher, she own the right to pursue his brighter career. If she wants to leave, in my opinion, nothing can stop her even a high salary and position. So, these action may be meaningless.
So, this argument is too vague too persuasive. To strengthen it, the author should provide more evidence to support she is really an excellent professor and we'd better to take suitable actions to keep her in our university. |
