TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 534          TIME: 00:44:00          DATE: 2008-3-6 10:45:59

I do not agree with the speaker's assertion that tradition and modernization are incompatible. In my opinion, one can combine them with each other. My contention with the speaker involves the analysis of tradition and introduction of modernization and the combination of them.

Tradition is one of the most important parts of out culture. Once upon a time, the ancient people of our nation strived to contribute a stronger, more prospective country with more high-technologies. In the process of their lives fulfill with enterprise, they found there are lots of things are valuable to be reserved and inherited by future generations. Some of them are meaningful in teaching the offspring’s' about ceremony, some of them are festivals to memorize celebrated people or heroes in the history of our nation and some of them have contribution in restricts people's ideas. They are known as 'tradition'. Through hundreds of years' passing from fathers to sons, tradition plays a significant role in the identification of a culture. And some traditions are inseparable in people's daily life. For example, China's spring festival is the most important festival to all Chinese.

Modernization is the deputy of contemporary society's characteristics. Modernization emerged as the developing of science and technology. It can not be skipped in any nations' history period from a developing country to a developed country. And the result of modernization is also easy to see. Such a s the World Trade Centre in New York which was exploded in 911, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Bill Gates’ empire Micro Soft which is a giant standing in IT professions. We say ‘they are important' because the result of modernization enhanced our living quality greatly. It is easy to comprehend that. Because modernization saves us from a bad situation in which human is drinking blood in very ancient time to a better one in which human is drinking coca-cola in daily life.  And with its contribution, our world becomes a more and more advanced one armed with productions which rely on highly science and technology.

Unfortunately, there always be some conflicts between tradition and modernization, it would be a appropriate idea to combine them together with each other. For example, in architecture the traditional buildings always resist the pace of building modern buildings. Should the old buildings yield to the modern ones? In my opinion, it depends. As some of them are priceless to our nation and the integrity of our culture, such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in Beijing, so the government has to protect them. However, the tradition buildings that are not valuable enough do not have such good luck. They are being destroyed as the result of modernizations. So, the best attitude to treat the tradition and modernization is to combine them under the enterprise of government and citizens.

In sum, admittedly tradition and modernization are important respectively in our contemporary society; as each one of them can represent a nation's culture no matter past or contemporary. As the development of our society, it can not be avoided that there will be some conflicts of them. What we human can do is to reserve both of them, and make them get along will with each other. I think that is good for the culture of our society, the economic of our nation and the development of our country.
百倍努力~
