TOPIC: ISSUE152 - "The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies."
WORDS: 523 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-3-9 1:44:28
The assertion present the point of view that the only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies, which exactly pointed out the rational aim of corporations. Actually, I am quite agree with the speaker while social responsibilities are also concerned by corporate executives when they are trying their best make profits inside the pattern of law.
Above all, we should never avoid or be shame to admit that the main aim of every corporation is to make money as much as possible within the limitation of laws. That is to say, no corporation could survive long outside the pattern of laws. A telling example is that Yu Zhaolin, a famous Chinese entrepreneur whose factory used to produce underwear, was associated with several accuse of making money through illegal ways and finally ended-up with bankrupt. Also, a Chinese toy-manufacturer was charged for its questionable quality of toys which made some American kids ill after its products exported to U.S.A.. These cases well illustrated the importance for corporate executives to obey the law at all time.
Furthermore, it is also important for corporations to bear their social responsibility in minds since a kind of must. LaoZi, an ancient saint and philosopher in China, mentioned Dao as the core of his theory system, which means the law of nature as well as in every field. Dao also exists in business for corporations, what I mean is, no one could resist this kind of natural force and what we should do is always obey it. Achieved celebrities like Bill Gates will throw themselves to charity, which has become a general phenomenon recently and I would like to attribute it to their social responsibility and their will to repay something back to the society which gives them a lot. It is no doubt that this kind of behavior owing even more reputation and respect to them, which is an indirect but also profound way for corporations to make profits.
Moreover, social responsibility is not only a must but also a kind of need to corporations. According to the theory "Hierarchy of Need" by Abraham Maslow, people 's need are ranked into five hierarchies and the second from the top hierarchy is that the need of self-esteem which means when people's basic needs like physical needs are met, they will likely to shift into higher leveled one and longing for things such as fame, reputation etc.. Clearly, this need of corporations can be easily meet when they concern for social affairs such as environmental protection, honesty to the public and so on. Mengniu, a branch of milk in China, is thriving since it has sponsored for a live show
To sum up, making money as much as possible for companies provided they stay within the law is sure to be the first task and responsibility of corporate executives, but far from the only one. For the corporation's sake, he should also pay attention to such things as promoting the social active evaluation of the company through doing some charity work in their company's name etc..
