Do the arts, such as painting, music, literature reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society?  Since individuals are carriers of the society and their ideas make up the society’s, I agree with the speaker. But the form of arts is not the sole way reflecting them.

It cannot be denied in some special times, say age of despotism, the arts are appropriate forms for people to express their ideas and thoughts. As long as we looking back to human history, we would find there were many period of time when people were ruled by king and upper class, they were deprived the right of free speech. Therefore arts became a safe and effective way for them to vent and complain. <Dove>--the most famous painting by Picasso who was the cynosure of the artists in human history, is a direct example for it. Picasso witnessed the violence of the German soldiers--throwing his neighbor ---an innocent little boy down to the stairs because they doubted him informing their enemies by dove. In that period of time, even Picasso desired to prevent this cruel act he could do nothing but be silence. Otherwise he would be the next killed man. As a painter, he could just use his pen to express his sorrow and angry, thus <Dove> was born. It expressed the desire of people all over the world who are against war and for peace.

Besides the necessity, we should admit that arts have their own merits to reveal the hidden ideas of people and society. Arts include various forms which are agile enough and have more persuasive power to made individuals’ ideas and attitudes be more convincing and reliable. We all know the distinguished American Satire writer --Mark Twain. He was by nature of powerful of thought, and had keen and penetrative look to disclose the dark side of the society. His style of writing was humorous and satiric. The writing <Running For Governor> hit the mark to attack the malpractice of the election system of America of that time. It was much wiser to use this kind of form rather than directly abuse because the former not only represented the writer’s wisdom but also would be more impressive to civilians and easier for them to comprehend.

Arts, to some extent, actually reveal some society's foibles, but they would never be the best way to solve these problems. People still need other methods to settle them completely. Legislation is the first way to meliorate the faults. In America, people have the right of petition and protest in front of the Capital Mountain, expressing their needs and discontentment. Government leaders will take their advises and requests into consideration, then enact new laws to satisfy public's requirements. Also, election entitles citizens to elect their satisfactory governors. Politicians who want to rise to authority should respect public's will and promise to carry out/ implement new policies to ensure public's well-being. This, to a certain extent, is another way for people to express their wishes.  Finally, in this modern society, people are granted the right of free speech. Through Blog, TV, radio, paper, magazines and so forth, people have no hurdle to say what they want, as long as the speeches are legal.

To sum up, arts do reveal some hidden ideas and impulses of a society, but several other ways are still needed to build up a more advanced one.
