TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."

With rapidly increasing life complexity and technology, our modern society has improved science, culture and even nature to support the high level of our life. But, there are somthing exactly inverse to technology and science exist in our life all the time, no matter in the western countries or eastern countries; no matter in ancientry or in modern time. As we know, astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits always mysterious to us, they stand for something unknown of our life and fate. Some people indeed interested in them and study them. However, in my point of view, these nonmainstream areas play an important role in society, and they satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science to some extent.
First of all, with the development of society, most of matters can be explained by technology and science, even those things that cannot be expalined decades ago. For example, decades ago, when people walked in the open country especially some place where no man lived in the night, they always could see some burning light far away, they are scared and curious about the fire. Then, they thought the fire was burned by some unknow ghost. However, today we can expain it with science, because there are always the chemical element called phosphorus in the bones of died animals, which can burned itself in a very low temperature. So, people today don't feel scared about the fire at all. After all, the mainstream of society is science, we can expain most of nature phenominons with science. And, science changed human's life from wild to cities, from proverty to richness. We human should pay more attention and money on science.
Howwever, there still exist some phenominon in society even science and technology cannot explained today even society are developed today. For example, Bermuda Triangle is a mysterious place until today, called "Devil's Triangle",too, is an imaginary area located off the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States of America, which is noted for a supposedly high incidence of unexplained disappearances of ships and aircraft. The most famous US Navy losses which have occurred in the area popularly known as the Bermuda Triangle are USS Cyclops in March 1918 and the aircraft of Flight 19 in December 1945. The ship probably sank in an unexpected storm, and the aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean, no physical traces of them have ever been found. Now, nobody are brave enough to go there.
There is another example, during the past years, a lot of magzines and newspapers presented comments and photos about UFO, and many people said they had once seen UFO in some special time, we human just guess that UFO is a tool of somebody out of the earth, but we still cannot show any evidence to prove our guess. Therefor, a lot of people use astrology and so on to expain these things which cannot be expained by science.
In addition, in the eastern countries, such as India and some races of China, their customes are superstitious for everything. There are somebody who are worked as fortune-telling tellers or teachers and something else. They believe there exists something supernature, whose power is stronger than anything else, domainstrate their lives. All these things cannot be changed by science, because we have to respect the custom of the race.
So, in some countries, these nonmainstream areas plays an important even vital role in their life. Again, we can find something to expain those things we unexpained with science now even it is not proved by science. But we should believe that more and more unknown things can be expained by technology and science with the development of society.
TOPIC: ARGUMENT17 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper.
"Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ-which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks-has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance."

The argument is well-presented, but not thoroughly well-reasoned. According to it, the author comes to the conclusion that Walnut Grove should continue useing EZ Disposal because EZ collects waste twice a week and it has ordered additional trucks and 80 percent of the citizens approved its performance last year according to a survey though it raised its monthly fee from 2,000 dollars to 2,500 dollars. The author failed to consider many alterntive aspects. I will discuss them in turn.
First of all, though EZ collects trsash twice a week, but does the environment of Walnut Grove need to be cleared twice a week? Maybe the trash of the town is not too much in a week time, and there is no need to collect twice a week, only once a week is enough. So, if they pay more money to use EZ, it is a wast of money. Everything we do ,we do it for its value and need. So, the author does not consider about it.
In the second place, even twicw a week is necessary, but the author does not pay attention to the additional trucks of EZ. Though it ordered more trucks. There are still some problems. Firstly, how many more trucks did it order? If it only ordered one or two more trucks, the effect of trash collecting cannot be more obvious than ABC. Secondly, even EZ ordered more trucks, will it make all the trucks go out to work each time? Perhaps it oders a part of the trucks to work this time, the other part of trucks next time, in this case, the efficiency cannot be improved. Thirdly, even all the trucks take part in the work each time, does the town can accomodate so many trucks? Perhaps a traffic jam will happen because so many trucks run on the road. The author have to survey all these conditions.
Moreover, is the survey convincing? The author does not give any data about the survey. How many people had been involved in the survey? If only 10 persons of all the citizens, then their suggestion cannot stand for all the citizen. On the other hand, what kind of responders did they chhoose? If all the responders are the relatives of the workers in EZ, I don't think the result is just. Furthermore, even the result of the survey is accurate, it does not mention that the recomment of the citizens to ABC's performance. Perhaps the more than 80 percent of the responders think ABC's performance is "very satisfied". If it is true, pay less money and get more approvement, who don;t want to do it?
In conclusion, the author has to give a more detailed data about how many trucks EZ ordered and whether it is need to collect trash twice a week. Again, the author should also take a survey to the responders' attitude to ABC's performance. Only he or she provide more detailed and convincing data to support the view can I be persuaded. |
