221"The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."(42)

People who lack of history knowledge could probably suppose people in different period are significantly different. I concede, as the speaker asserts, that they will abandon such an illusion after the study of history and else, if careful enough they will realize that contemporary people actually share much in common with their ancestors. However, this claim is superficial and one-sided for the chief benefit of the study of history is far to this: we get not only excitement about the similarities but also the short-cut and tips which avoid mistakes and tremendous disaster after we identify the similarities and differences.

Admittedly, through the earnest study of history, it is not difficult to find that we derived many respects from our ancestors. One needs look no further than some basic and higher cognitive emotion, such as joy, anger, fear and love. It is history that inform us emotion is innate in any time. For instance, today we are happy with the taste of win as any general in the past like triumph in the battle. Alike, romantic love, which once was regarded as a big difference between contemporary and past human being by famous writer c.s.lewis, proved to have been expressed in a book over predating the medieval poetry a thousand years. Another respect can involve some culture which have formed since a long time ago. Such as we give the respect to the elder people. So, history really provide great evidence to indicate we are not totally different from our ancestors.

However, the significance of study of history can hardly be concluded in a few word as the speaker asserts. The more important thing is that it might be beneficial to appreciate the unchanging and changing traits of humankind because history just function as a veteran who can guide us to develop and succeed.

On the one hand, we can infer some theory based on some constant characters human own and further apply the theory to the science research or socialization with the others. For instance, as I refer to, humankind have innate and universal emotion which is not influenced by any other changes such as in culture, space and time range. Given such a theory, the research in artificial intelligence can make further progress, and the communication between people from different race and country become easy through the facial expression even without a word.

On the other hand, it is equally beneficial to realize the differences between people from different time period. A simple evidence is the lecture and debate of the candidates during the election. Only one who realize the different needs of the populace now comparing with the past can obtain the most supports from the people and get final victory. While one who can not figure out the chang of people’s minds will suffer the attacks from the opponents.

In sum, by studying history, our illusion about great significant difference exist between people from different period will be corrected. However, such a simple influence can not be defined as the chief benefit of the study of history. Because history lead us to think profoundly more than the superficial fact of the existing of similarities and differences.

1首段提到we get the short-cut and tips which avoid mistakes and tremendous disaster after we identify the similarities and differences”是更大的benefit,但
