195The following is a letter from an editor at Liber Publishing Company to the company's president.
"In recent years, Liber has unfortunately moved away from its original mission: to publish the works of regional small-town authors instead of those of big-city authors. Just last year, 90 percent of the novels we published were written by authors who maintain a residence in a big city. Although this change must have been intended to increase profits, it has obviously backfired, because Liber is now in serious financial trouble. The only way to address this problem is to return to our original mission. If we return to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors, our financial troubles will soon be resolved."

The agrument recommends that company should publish only the works of regional small-town authors in order to address financial troubles.To support this recommendation the author cites serval facts.However, the recommendation relies on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions, which render it unconvincing as it stands.

First of all, the agrument overlooks such a possibility that authors who maintain a residence in a big city are not necessarily big-city those.It is entirely possible that a regional small-town author could possess a dwelling in a big city as well.Since the agrument fails to account for authors who maintain a residence in a big city whether are big-city authors or not,the author cannot make any sound recommendations to Liber based on that fact.

Secondly,the agrument also assumes unfairly that serious Liber's financial troubles is caused by publishing the works of big-city authors---rather than some other matters.Perhaps increasing in the price of raw materials such as printing oil and papaer leads to the increase of cost, or    the consequence of poor management which hurts healthy operation of company.Thus, without better evidence that Liber's financial troubles is the result of publishing the works of big-city authors, the author cannot convince me that Liber's financial troubles will  be resolved by stopping publiction of the works of big-city authors.

Finally, even if the agrument's author can substantiate all of the foregoing assumptions, he provides no firm evidence that it is only way to resolve Liber's financial troubles is to return to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors. Perhaps cutting down necessary official expenditures, or dismissing some unimportant employees, would be more effective. Without ruling out all other possible means to solve problem,the agrument remains unconvincing.

In sum, the agrument has not convinced me that the only way to resolve Liber's financial troubles is to return to publishing the works of regional small-town authors. To bolster the agrument the author must provide complete and clear information about the published works' authors, and rule out all other possible factors to result in financial troubles.
