It is true that society seems to place less importance on the intellect that includes reasoning and other cognitive skills. But I consider non-intellects are also indispensable. The best solution is to seek a balance between the two.
To begin with, we can never overlook the importance of intellect. There is no need to say how essential intellect is in the fields of mathematics, physics and chemistry. Actually, intellect is an indispensable ability in every part of our life. Some people may argue that intellect seems no use in arts like painting, music, and writing, which is a misunderstanding. No matter how successful the artist is, she must have begun from learning the basic skills that need cognitive ability. And only she has had a good command of the basic skills can she express her ideas and feelings effectively and thus promote in the field. What's more, intellect can help to impetus the development as well as the stability of our society. If scientists do not command good reasoning and cognitive skills, they cannot bring us to a more convenient future. If detectives are not quite good at reasoning, they cannot arrest the criminals and the crime rates will undoubtedly rise, which poses great threaten to the society. Intellect plays an essential role in our life.
However, society begins to overlook the importance of intellect perhaps due to the reason that more and more people seem to make achievements by luck. Without intellect, they still make large amounts of money through stocks and risk invests. But people who think like this may neglect the reasoning and cognitive skills which are needed behind their glories. Stocks and other kinds of invests also need reasoning and analyzing skills to judge whether the invest is worthy or not. Also, the education system has the incline to overlook the cultivating of intellect. Schools are placing more emphasis on exams to judge a student's ability, which requires the ability of memorizing rather than reasoning and cognitive skills. This certainly does little good to children and the future of our society when considering the importance of intellect.
Though intellect is really essential, it is not to say that emotions are less important. Without emotions, people are no different from robots. We need emotions to keep our families, to love and to help others in the society. It is because we have happiness, compassion, angry and other emotions that our life become significant, that we feel we are alive.
So it will be much better if intellects and emotions can combined together. Intellect is essential to give a direction to people when they are driven by emotions only and become insensible. As we all know, we are born with different kinds of desires and sometimes people may do something crazy in order to satisfy their desires. Intellects are needed under this kind of situations to make them calm down and analyze whether what they are going to do is right or not. Also, emotions are indispensable in the process of setting a target for people. If Madam Curie did not consider to help humans enjoy better life, how could she devote herself to research even at the cost of her life, from which we can see the function of emotions.
In conclusion, society should seek a balance between emotions and intellect in stead of placing much more importance on either of the two, only through which can lead to a stable and prosperous society.
