ARGUMENT195 - The following is a letter from an editor at Liber Publishing Company to the company's president.

"In recent years, Liber has unfortunately moved away from its original mission: to publish the works of regional small-town authors instead of those of big-city authors. Just last year, 90 percent of the novels we published were written by authors who maintain a residence in a big city. Although this change must have been intended to increase profits, it has obviously backfired, because Liber is now in serious financial trouble. The only way to address this problem is to return to our original mission. If we return to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors, our financial troubles will soon be resolved."

提纲 1 财政困难和出版大城市作家未必有关系
       2 小说在整个出版社出版比例未知
       3 解决财政问题的方法还有很多

The arguer's assertion that returning to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors and our financial problems will be resolved is based on the evidence that we moved away from our original mission by publishing the works of big-city authors, and thus our company has been stuck in financial troubles. However, the argument is made upon a series of logical problems and is therefore wholly unpersuasive.

For one thing, the author lacks sufficient supportive evidence to prove that the sale of the novels from big-city authors has established a causal relationship with the financial troubles. A myriad of other factors may be involved in causing the declining profits, such as the management and marketing problems, or the demand of book buyers has shifted since the works published by our company do not fit for their interests. Without ruling out these possibilities, the editor cannot satisfactorily conclude that Liber will return to prosperity by returning to its original missions.

Furthermore, the author commits a logic fallacy by hastily generalizing unrelated concepts. As indicated in the argument, the deduction that we have move away from our original mission is made by publishing 90 percent of the novels written by big-city authors. However, without knowing how much proportion of the publishing of novels are taken in our company, we cannot riskily define that the major task of our work has altered. In order to justify the arguer's conclusion, facts about the diversity of books Liber published and the part of novels accounting for should be involved.

Even assuming the serious financial troubles are due to the change in our publishing mission, what makes the author's claim vulnerable is that the only way to address this problem is to return to the original mission as suggested. Nonetheless, before supplying with conspicuous evidence, other methods can also be counted as solutions of enhancing the Liber’s revenue. Since Liber is in serious financial trouble, it is very likely that staffs of the financial department do not work effectively and lead the company to be stuck in a mess. Or even there is overstocking of former books written by the regional small town authors. Thus Liber may need to rearrange the duties and obligations of those employees in order to improve Liber’s publishing performance and help increase the gross of Liber.

As a consequence, the arguer fails to base a causal relationship between publishing only the works of regional small-town authors and the resolution of Liber’s financial troubles. To strengthen the argument, the arguer would have to provide more evidence that the cause of the financial troubles is publishing novels of big-city authors. To better evaluate the argument, we would need more information about the publishing proportion of novels.

The arguer's assertion that returning to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors and our(their) financial problems will be resolved is based on the evidence that we(they) moved away from our(their) original mission by publishing the works of big-city authors, and thus our(their) company has been stuck in financial troubles. However, the argument is made(depend) upon a series of logical problems and is therefore wholly unpersuasive.

For one thing, the author lacks sufficient supportive evidence to prove that the sale of the novels from big-city authors has established(去掉) a causal relationship with the financial troubles. A myriad of other factors may be involved in causing the declining profits, such as the management and marketing problems, or the demand of book buyers has shifted since(改为and, 后面不是前面的原因,所以不用since) the works published by our(their) company do not fit for their interests. Without ruling out these possibilities, the editor cannot satisfactorily conclude that Liber will return to prosperity by returning to its original missions.
如果这段话结尾这么写的话,就将这段话放在论证的最后一段,也就是全文第四段。如果搁在第一段的话,结尾红色部分写成Liber's financial trouble is caused by publishing works of big-city authors比较好。

Furthermore, the author commits a logic fallacy by hastily generalizing unrelated concepts. As indicated in the argument, the deduction that we(they) have move away from our(their) original mission is made by publishing 90 percent of the novels written by big-city authors. However, without knowing how much proportion of (去掉)the publishing of novels are taken in our company, we cannot riskily define that the major task of our(their) work has altered. In order to justify the arguer's conclusion, facts about the diversity of books Liber published and the part of novels accounting for should be involved. 感觉这段话搁在全文第二段比较好,因为反驳的是题目的第一句话。

Even assuming the serious financial troubles are due to the change in our(their) publishing mission, what makes the author's claim vulnerable is that the only way to address this problem is to return to the original mission as suggested. Nonetheless, before supplying with conspicuous evidence, other methods can also be counted as solutions of enhancing the Liber’s revenue. Since Liber is in serious financial trouble, it is very likely that staffs(staff本身可作职员总称) of the financial department do not work effectively and lead the company to be stuck in a mess. Or even there is overstocking of former books written by the regional small town authors. Thus Liber may need to rearrange the duties and obligations of those employees in order to improve Liber’s publishing performance and help increase the gross(利润用profits就好) of Liber.

As a consequence, the arguer fails to base a causal relationship between publishing only the works of regional small-town authors and the resolution of Liber’s financial troubles. To strengthen the argument, the arguer would have to provide more evidence that the cause of the financial troubles is publishing novels of big-city authors. 语言流畅,论据充分,个人感觉将段落顺序调整一下会更好。若有评判不当的地方请见谅。
