The speaker asserts that the study of history has value only when it is relevant to our daily lives. However, in my opinion, I think that the speaker undercounts the function of history. Actually, the study of any subjects should aim at improving the development of society, in this case, all of which have value, including history.

Admittedly, in mordern society, lots of phenomenons of society and problems in our daily lives are closely linked with history. Most achievements nowadays we have made are based on the fundaments which were built by our predecessors. Take the development of computer as an example, which was a huge and complex object when it was invented in 20th century. According to the technology theorized by the predecessors, the latter persons promote computer to improve towards more lighter and smaller which is more convenient for common people to use. In addition, our daily customs and living habits are also influenced by the cuture passed down by predecessors. For example, Chinese people who grow up in the circumstance of Confucian culture pay much more emphasis on formality while most western countries are optional. Therefore, the study of history is indeed benefit for us to improve our daily lives.

However, the relationship with people's daily lives is not the only value of history. Since all subjects, including science and humanities, should have the purpose to promote our society advancing towards properity and improve the living level of people's daily lives. In this case, any study of subject will be worthy and valuable. The study of science could develop our technology and discover new theories which is related to the unknown world. The study of art works could gives general people hope of lives and then encourage them to make great effort to achieve their own goals. And the study of history could tells us the developing process of the society which we live in and reflects the problems in the society. All of those studies are valuable because they make a great contribution to the development of human race in the long run.

Moreover, as the elite which is left by the older generations, history records most of the problems which predecessors met before and the solution of which, which is a expensive treasure should be cherished. History is a mirror of a society, through the study of which some problems could be reflected. For example, the reason of why a arbitrary government would be turned over could be found in the study of history. If the mordern society ignores the thinkings of common people as a former arbitrary government did, this society will be come into its end soon or later. Since the recurrence of events in history, the study of history is useful and necessary for the development of a society, which is also valuable.

In short, whether the study of history have value or not depends on the contribution to the development of a society. In this case, the speaker undercounts the range of the valuable study of study.
