This statement consists of a series of two claims. The first claim is that technologies influence social customs and ethics. The second claim is that they determine customs and ethics of society. While i concede the first claim that technological development has a crucial impact on our society, whether i agree with the second claim depends on certain aspects.

The assertion is accurate insofar as technologies have an influence on social customs and ethics. A number of examples can be illustrated to this point. With the advancement in the Internet Technology, writing letters, the traditional way or customs several decades ago, gives place to emails. After all, it's quick and convenient for people to communicate with their friends or relative by sending emails. In terms of manufactory industry, a tremendous number of high-effective assembling machines are invented in order to raise the work efficiency instead of manufacturing products by hands and labors. Nowadays, people have enjoyed the fruitful achievements brought by technological development.

However, do technologies can really determine the social customs and ethics? Of course, not. Customs and ethics are unique characteristics representing one society and they are intrinsic and deep-rooted in the society since society came into existence. In fact, before a new technology appeared or being created, people in various fields, such as science, government, and academy would take it into consider whether a novel technology will accord with our social customs and ethics or not. Technology of cloning humane beings, which is still pure fiction, can well illustrate this, since it may destroy people's fundamental concept of ethnics. In addition, because of this special feature, society is hard to be determined by technologies, even if the technologies are highly civilized.

Although technologies cannot determine a society's customs and ethics, they can measure the civilized level and standards of a society. Compared with period in ancient-times, people survived depending on hunting, while nowadays we master the technology of husbandry and growing plants. Besides, people in ancient time suffers from deadly disease, while with advanced medical technologies, people are much healthier. There's no denying that our societies nowadays is more civilized than the one in ancient times with a huge number of technologies we master.

In sum, technologies can influence our social customs and ethics in certain aspects, but can not essentially determine our society. What's more, only when technologies are developed on the basis of social customs and ethics, they can benefit our society into a large extent.
