Whether the faculty should spend time working outside the academic world in the professions relevant to their courses is controversial, which involves debate between people with distinct angles. In my point of view, it is correct that faculty applying their academic knowledge in the society will somehow improve the quality of instruction in college or university; we still need take consideration in the(不要the)different conditions. In order to draw conclusion, the case to case analyses are necessary.
On one hand, to the faculty members of some certain subjects, working outside the academia will not help with their academic ability; moreover, will bring negative effect to their research and instruction. To illustrate the point evidently, let us look at the example of the professors major in philosophy. First, there are no appropriate jobs outside the academic area related to philosophy and metaphysics for the philosophy professors to apply their episteme. They specialize in studying in examining the nature of reality, the relation between idea and image, experience and truth, existentialism and skepticism. Conducting concrete jobs in society has nothing to do with the philosophic professors’ academic ability; contrarily working outside the academia consequentially distracts them from the research and studying. For doing social work will occupy professors’ time, energy and mind, which would be used for reading the classical masterpieces or devoted into the theorization. In the end, working outside the campus will degrade the scholarship of the professors. What is worse, the quality of instruction will decline for the same reasons. Hence it is no worthwhile (worthwhile是形容词吧?)some academic areas, especially those deserve extremely efforts and concentration, try to find work outside the academia.
On the other hand, apart from those professors limited by the nature of the subjects they are studying at, I approve that the professors combine their academic knowledge and the practical work in the professional positions in the society. The faculty in the academic areas, such as business administration, construction and engineering, should work in the real world, for there are some benefits to do so. On one sense, theorization from the realistic experience is an outstanding nature of these fields. The professors can emulate the latest perceive and direct cases for their academic study and teaching. The students will be inspired by the real examples and benefit a lot from the professors’ instruction. On the other sense(有这样用得么?), catching up with the newest information in these fields, the professors can provide the students with potential foreground and the accurate suggestions about future career in the relevant career. Their own experience and direction will help students make wise decisions after graduation.
To sum up, after comparing the advantages and disadvantages of faculty working outside the academic area, we can draw the conclusion that for (不要for)there is no need for the professors in some fields to work in the society, for whom the social works are unavailable and ineffectual; while other faculty in the subjects of practicability(实用学科是这样说的么?我不知道诶) can enrich their academic ability(复数) in the real world.
