14The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.

"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

In this argument, the author concludes that they at Green Themb Gardening Center can increase their profits by greatly expending the variety of vegetable seeds. To support this conclusion, he assumes that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables by two evidences-a last-month national survey and the local sale of local gardening magazine. I find this argument depend on several unsubstantiated grounds.

First of all, to support the conclusion that people are interested in growing vegetables, one reason cited by the author is a national survey that, many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables in supermarkets. However, the extent of the survey is so wide that the consequence can not stand for attitude of local residents. On the one hand, perhaps local supermarkets always provide fresh vegetable to make consumers satisfied; on the other hand, admittedly local residents dissatisfy with supermarkets, it is entirely possible that they turn to shop in the bazaars instead of supermarkets. Obviously either of these two possibilities would overthrow that conclusion that people interest in growing own vegetables. In the second place, the other reason for the interest in growing vegetables among consumers is a sale record that gardening magazine sold out at the Village news stand three months continuously. But when citing this evidence to support this argument, the author provides no information to prove that people buy this magazine in order to learn to grow vegetable. There is a substantiated possibility that this magazine do not teach people grow vegetable but take care of flowers or clip lawn. It may also be possible that the sale of this magazine is not pretty high while sale of others decrease largely in these months. Boss assumption would make this conclusion so dubious. Therefore , the author should provide more information to strengthen his evidence.

Finally, admittedly people interest in growing own vegetables, the author's assertion that the center can make profits by greatly expending the variety of vegetable seeds is unconvincing. Secondly, possibly the great increasing of variety of seeds would also enhance the cost, and then as a result of it, the profits would largely descend. Thirdly, maybe there are several company storing seeds in order to make profits. Then, with so many competitor, the profits would be compressed extraordinarily small. So without ruling out these conditions, this conclusion is unpersuasive.

In sum, the assertion that the center would make profits make profits through vegetable seeds stock is not well supportive. To make this argument convincing the author should provide more substantiated evidences to prove the interest in growing vegetable from local residents. Besides, the author should more information to convince me that storing the variety of vegetable seeds would make large profits.
