Issue 51 “Education will be truly effective only when it is specially designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.”
Education, defined as school instruction according to speaker’ assertion, is one of the most important part of one’s life. The argument of whether we should provide student with specially designed education has been disputed for a long time. In my point of view, since most of us need general knowledge and a basic skill to survive in society, a logical curriculum designed by educators is useful for each student, meanwhile a few of specially designed lessons are necessary, especially for college students.
The purpose of the Education in school is to introduce students to general information, basic skills, and positive attitude to certain subjects, rather than merely telling them the very details such as a historic event or an illation process of a mathematic equation. Through the introduction, students gain knowledge of how to acquire useful information by an effective method, and then do research in their own way. Such fundamental knowledge is required for subsequent advancements in any particular fields for each student. Furthermore, basic skills such as communicating with people and collaborate with others are to some extent even more crucial than fundamental knowledge of a certain subject in for students in the future. A well-designed curriculum puts enough emphasis on developing the group collaboration and interpersonal skills, preventing students from becoming intellectually crippled. Education with a uniform curriculum logically designed by specialists is useful and effective for each student to develop comprehensively in the future.
On the other hand, without any work experience, students are hardly aware of their interests and needs. For example, a student’s feeling that he is only intelligent and interested in physics is partial if no one introduces anything about chemistry to him. Moreover, is it true that comprehension in art is useless for a student study in science? The answer I think should be negative. Lacking of experience in analyzing and evaluating their situation, decisions students made on this important topic may be partial and immature. Accordingly, the education has the responsibility to introduce each student to different subjects as more as possible, among which student himself adjusts the balance to put more emphasis on subjects those interest him. Therefore, under such circumstance, a comprehensive curriculum is more effective than an arbitrarily made education.
However, as we realize the importance of personality in one’s development, education should similarly accentuate the characteristic of each student, especially of college students. At a college level, students who have certain majors are capable of making their own choices and have plans about their future career. Besides the compulsory curriculum for their majors, education will be favored which provides them with more spaces to meet individual needs and interests. Through a free atmosphere, college students may develop their strengths, minimize the weaknesses, and improve their competence against others in future career. Therefore, it is logical for the colleges to offer optional lessons, which encourage the students to meet their own needs and interests besides the fundamental knowledge and basic skills.
In conclusion, to some extends, I can hardly agree with the speaker that only meeting the individual needs and interests will education be effective. As I states above, every one need basic skills to live and work in society. Besides, some students are failing to make comprehensive decisions of their needs and interests. Therefore, a well-designed curriculum made by education specialists is effective and necessary for each student. However, a flexible education with optional lessons for students, especially for college students, is desirable. |
