issue 43 " To be a effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards" 字数 487 这一篇好像是我这次AW的第一篇i
When asked about whether a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards, people may find it hard to come to consensus due to their different experiences and conflicting values. The speaker thinks that because they are leaders, thus they should set up an example for our general public to follow. While others think that they can ignore leaders' tiny immoral behaviors. From my perspective, I basically agree with the speaker.
On the one hand, officials are required to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards, such as honesty and braveness, thus they can correctly arrange challenge. Our leaders must have these qualities and, in this way, they can bring profits to our country and citizens. For example, Enlai Zhou, the former premier of China, who had the highest ethical and moral standards, did his best to China and brought many profits to Chinese people. He had won unparalleled respect and admiration from all Chinese people. After his death, the United Nation decided to low the flag to memorize this effective premier. From this, we know the advantages of the highest ethical and moral standards and, in this way, not only to themselves will win a good frame but also to their countries.
On the other hand, if public official have a bad ethical and moral standards, he will do bad to his country and lose their credits in the citizen's hearts. When two candidatesa run an election campaign, the one who have immoral behaviors always lose may partly result from his opponent's storming on his immoral behavior. The opponent may make the best use of the former one's inferior morality to win the election. Otherwise, the immoral scandals maybe damages to both the leader himself and the general public. For example, after Nixon's Watergate scandal, a lot of people would not allow another Nixon to get on stage to be their leader and even lose credence on the leaders. So we know the leader's credits accord with his ethical and moral standards.
Moreover, officials are not moralist and they do not have to make a much higher standard than common people because no one is a perfect man. Bill Clinton, whose love affair still makes him uncomfortable before the media, is still considered to be an effective leader in these peaceful times of the United States, that he had his job well done during his eight years' leadership, the unemployment had fallen to the deepest rate ever since the Great Depression. Certainly, his scandal ruined his public fame in people’s heart, but no one would accused him for his immoral behavior before his great contribution, instead, people still cherish him for his contributions that he had done during his time on stage.
In sum, from what has been discussed above, we may finally draw the conclusion that we should call for balance of whether a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards.
