I strongly agree with the speaker that the artist give society something of eternal value. However, in my observation, the critic also does a great favor in providing lasting value to society.

The first fundamental question to take into account is "what is lasting value". Although various controversies raged at this definition, I would rather prefer to one definition one of my art teacher in my high school one said in the class (and I paraphrase):"Lasting value is what the artist put into the society and eventually what each individual get from the society". Not only does it illustrate the true essence of lasting value, but also indict the significance of both the artist and the critic. In fact, artist and critic are just like twins who are supplement for the other, providing appreciation of art to people.

The artist is the originality of everlasting value in terms of "what they have put into the society". History is replete with such examples. For example, it is Beethoven who created the classical Hero and Fate; It is Gaude Monet, the worldwide famous represent of impressionism, painted Sunrise: Impression which left people the appreciation of art. The artist uses their unique perspectives to observe every scene of our life, and ultimately create these precious works, ranging from literature to painting, from music to building, and from films to carving. By means of putting their subject creative feelings and emotions into their works, they add hue to our quotidian lives and left society eternal value. Without the originality and creativeness of artist, art dies.

On the other hand, as for "what people get from society", no one can neglect the contribution of the critic, who interprets the essence of artist's work to accelerate the appreciation and understanding. Admittedly, most people would argue, for instance, it is right the first impression and visceral feeling of each individual about works that the real art exists, as far as I am concerned, because of the limit knowledge of art, works and the artist, that feeling for most people would be ostensible. Take sun flower, one of the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh as an example, on the impression of that painting, most people would appreciate it for the beautiful color exhibited in the painting; however, with the interpretation of the critic, people can know Van Gogh's emotion and his inspire of love and freedom. Without the critic, the value of sun flower would be diminished, which is both ironic for the artist, but a great pity for human beings.

Simple put, without the artist, no lasting value of art would exist in the world. Without the critic, no eternal value of art can be appreciated by the society. Thus, neither the artist nor the critic can be excluded from leaving society everlasting value.
