TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The author offer several evidences to demonstrate that it is of great significance to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. Firstly, the author shows that five best-selling newest store were all use cheeses from Wisconsin. Secondly, a survey of Cheeses of the World magazine is offered to strengthen his conclusion. However, this argument is well presented with several evidences, yet it is far from satisfactorily reasoned. As a threshold problem involved in this argument is that it is highly possible that the conclusion of the argument is not the best way to improve profits in all of our stores.  On one hand, the discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese might fail to be the best way to improve profits. Profit is a factor of not only revenue but also cost. Reducing the storing of cheese might lead some customs fail to buy it which renders the decrease of the profits. In this case, the decrease of the imported cheese should consider more crucial factors which may influence the profits. On the other hand, other possible plans may also improve the profits, for instance, the improvement of the management, sales promotion, increasing the publicity. Five best-selling newest cheese stores can not prove that the domestic cheeses are more welcomed. A year time to survey is not long enough; it is quite likely that the cheese requirement will change with the other factors just like the government policy and the improvement of the oversea cheese company. Meanwhile, other crucial factors may also influence the result. What is more, the domestic cheeses is best-selling is not equal to high profits. Just as I said before, the profits are including both revenue and cost. In this case, the survey fails to give the conclusion that our company should reduce our store of imported cheeses to improve profits.Finally, the arguer offers a survey that indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. However, it is highly possible that the clients of the magazine are not the customs but the researchers and the sales. Meanwhile, it is possible that the sale of the magazine is too small, so the survey is including little customs who buy cheese. Without ruling out those possible factors of the survey, we can not conclude that the domestic cheeses are more popular.In sum, the evidence provide in the argument do not lend strong support to the conclusion and final suggestion. In order to be more convincing, the arguer should give solid proofs that the cheese from domestic is more popular than the imported cheeses. In addition, the survey is lack of evidence to be reliablity. The most important thing is that we must focus on our profits, to pull up the profits is our final purpose.
