TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.

"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

The author suggests us to elect Ann, based on the assumption that the increasing level of pollution is the fault of the Frank, who is a member of the council, and the reasoning that as a member of Good Earth Coalition, Ann can really make a difference for the environment issue of the Clearview. But I want to point out his assumption and reasoning is unreliable and wrong.

For substituting his assertion that Clearview troubled by the evironment issue, he makes examples: in first level, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, in my view, which is groundless. As told by the common sense, we know that not all the factories will do harm to the environment. It is entirely possible that these are pollution free factories. Then in the second level, the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illness. While I doubt about the percentage, without the absolute number, we can't be persuade that pollution is worthy to pay attention to. Even supposing the issue is really an emergency to solve, is the air pollution the only reason of the illness. It is common sense that respiratory illness can cause by the cold weather, the pandemics illness.

Furthermore, the author's assumption that the increasing level of pollution is the fault of the Frank, who is a member of the council, is really unfair. It was entirely possible that the council had tried to stop the factories' construction, but failed. Even though this assumption may fail, Frank may support the environment protecting in the council. Without the specific information about Frank, we can't be persuaded that Frank should take the responsibility of the pollution.

The same as the foregoing refuting, the author and the reasoning that as a member of Good Earth Coalition, can really make a difference for the environment issue of the Clearview. While, without the information of her work in the Good Earth Coalition and her position about the environment issue, we can't be persuade. Even Ann is proved to be an environment protector, whether she has the ability to be a mayoral is still a question. Without the information that she has great experiences and is capable to solve the complex issues and emergency, we should not elect her

To sum up, the author should give more detailing reports about the pollution issues, and the information about two candidates working abilities, and their position towards the environment, so that his suggestion will be more worthy to take.
