"The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."

Common sense informs us an individual confronts a multitude of choices and might be plunged into a dilemma for thousands of times in the whole life. However, we should not equal those dilemmas with no choice unreasonably. Considering this, I fundamentally agree with the contention that the absence of choice is a rare circumstance.

Admittedly, limited by certain human evolvement disciplines and social long-existed rules, some circumstance with no choice do exist in the society. On a personal level, it is impossible for you to choose your parents, your birthday and your dead day. Moreover, many unexpected cases such as the sudden terroristic attack 911 and the catastrophic 5.12 earthquake happened in China, defy people's prediction. More extremely, no matter how high we can jump, we cannot fly like a bird; no matter how fast we can run, we cannot catch up the panther as all those are decided by our natural and instinctive attribute as human, which is hard to be changed by acquired efforts. Besides, on a national level, the emperor of an autocratic country would not provide opportunity for the residents to make their own choices on certain specially issues, say, the election of next emperor, the constitution of law, the tax issue, etc. For example, in the ancient China, when meeting the emperor, common people had to kneel down to show their respects; otherwise they might be killed.

While the circumstance with no choice does exist, the amount is decreasing largely with the development of science and the improvement of society. With gene technology, we can choose clone a exactly same person; with advanced medicine, we can choose to live longer instead of waiting for the death when suffered from some diseases which might be incurable in the past; with cosmetic surgery, we can choose to change our appearances which might be unbelievable hundreds of years ago. Science paves the way for another choice. Further, with the improvement of social system, in a democracy nation, people are entitled to behave in their own ways - voting freely, talking freely and publishing freely. An increasing number of opportunities are waiting for them. When an American meets the president in the street, he/she may chart with him or ignore him, and even dispute with him on certain policies issued recently. So we would be hard-pressed to find out a situation where there is no choice.

Nevertheless, a host of people are still complaining that there is no choice in their life. However, the real case that they feel no choice is the fact that they are afraid to make choice, which is especially true to those who got bogged down. Unwilling to make efforts and afraid of failure, those people intend to regard difficult and risking choices as no choice, which is counterproductive to one's growth. Facing unfavorable choices, they are determined to give up them before their selection. For example, to a candidate who fails in the college entrance exam, he might consider his life hopeless while ignoring certain choices such as trying it again the next year, learning some skills by himself or going for an inferior one. Unable to endure the heavy pressure and make greater efforts, it is himself who brings him into a real despairing circumstance. Proverb has it that:" Where is a will, there is a road." Keep going in the dog and you will find many wonderful opportunities are waiting for you in the near future. So, the circumstance with no choice does not exist once you are ready to try everything.

In sum, it is true in some extreme cases such as birth, death and certain unalterable social facts, people are forced to do something under those rules. However, with the development of our society, in most cases, we have many choices and what really matters is that whether you are brave enough to make those choices, especially the unique one left behind.
