238The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's
board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

In the argument, arguer asserts that Mira Vista(MV) should offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills. To support his assertion, arguer makes a comparison between graduates from Green Mountain College and those from Mira Vista College. Although the argument seems sound and acceptable, it contains several severe fallacies.
First of all, the comparison between graduates from Mirsa Vista College and those from Mountain College could not prove that a larger percent of graduates from GM got a job than that of graduates from MV did. The comparison is ridiculous and unwarranted. Though 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors in GM had job offers from prospective employers and only 70 percent of seniors who informed the placement office that they could be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, we have no information about the part of graduates that did not inform the placement office whether they could be seeking employment, and it could be entirely possible that graduates that did not inform office all found jobs and they constitute of a large part of graduates, which would certainly increase the total percentage of graduates that found jobs. Besides, information about graduates only recorded those found full time jobs and with three months. Thus, a large number of graduates finding part time jobs or finding jobs outside three months are excluded and the cooperation between graduates from two colleges is meaningless. In this sense, arguer should supply us convincing evidence to demonstrate that more graduates in GM found jobs than those in MV.
Furthermore, even if a larger percent of graduates from GM than that of graduates from MV found jobs, we have no idea to conclude that this difference resulted from that GM has more business courses and more job counselors than MV. There are millions reasons could explain this consequence. For example, students in GM are more excellent than students in MV or graduates from GM all studied in popular majors such as accounting, marketing and finance, and both these possibilities would contribute to the higher employment of graduates in GM. Therefore, without demonstrate convincingly, arguer has no way to make his argument sound reliable.
Finally, admittedly opening some business courses and employing job counselors could be effect to help students in finding jobs, however, there lies no evidence to show that MV should take the same method as Gm did because many differences between these two school. Maybe GM is an business school, and opening more courses would help its graduates, while MV is a technology school and to help graduates to find a good job, it needs to strength graduates professional knowledge in math, physics, and biochemistry etc. Consequencely, MV should have more courses on expert field rather than hire counselors or open more business courses.
To sum up, arguer fails to rule out many fallacies as mentioned above, causing his argument unwarranted and dubious. To better the logic of his argument, arguer should show convincing evidence that a larger percent of graduates found work in GM than that of graduates in MV did. At the same time, arguer has to demonstrate that having more courses in business and hire more counselors would help graduates in finding jobs in GM and this method works in MV. |
