To understand whether the documentation provided by video camera is more important than by written records, we should know what characteristics the two types have. And compare them for using in typical documentation.

What kind of documentation offered by video camera? First, video camera's records are produced in totally physical way, which means totally accuracy without any human bias, and which could show every detail under its scene. Second, the record process is live. The one who want to save the moment by video camera must record it during that moment happening. People need not waste so long time after the moment has passed, but there must be a person out of that moment to help people to record. Third, using that way, a video camera with a full charged battery is required to record and a DVD or a computer is needed to read that records. Forth, the time reading the record is the same as the time making.

In a so different way, written records are less accurate but more flexible. It made by one person in the recording moment with his or her own memory. So the record cannot contain most of the details with only a main story. Also, the records must have its maker's own opinion, therefore, they cannot show the moment totally objective. However, making written records are quite easy, what it required are only a pen and a notebook which are less expensive and more flexible. The written records would be preserved for longer time that the video ones and no limitation of the equipment. Finally, recording and reading time is less than the time of the moment lasting.

With the different advantages and disadvantages, it is clear we cannot conclude that the video camera has become a more important form of documentation than written records. We must choose the proper record method rather than just a more important one. For example, if a football match needs to record, a totally accurate video with full details is clearly better than the written records to enjoy. And if the students need schoolbook to guide them to study, a convenience written book is of course the better choice.

In addition, there is another type of records--the arts. Both the video based ones--the film and the character based ones--the literature is enjoyed by people for their different beauty. The film, with the accurate screen and actions can provide us the vital screen, which can easily bring us to the story’s world. In the film Harry Potter, the magic effect is beyond our real world, but we can receive that sense from the video’s special effect made by the computer. That vital sense cannot be received from the Harry Potter book. However, the film must be limited in 2 hours, so it cannot provide the full content of the book. Another unexpressed content in the film is the mental activities, which can easily be written on the book. Moreover, someone prefer the books just because its misty unreal world. They may think the movie destroyed there imagination.

In the end, because the different advantages in video records and the written ones, we cannot conclude which one is better. In our daily life, we should understand what kind of records we need and choose the better one.
