题目:ARGUMENT44 - The following is a recommendation from the business manager of Monarch Books.
"Monarch Books should open a café in its store to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened a café. Monarch, which has been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer following because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Opening the café would clearly attract more customers. The café would require relatively little space. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will likely become less popular given that the last national census indicated a significant decline in the percent of the population who are under age ten."

The conclusion author makes seems easy and ridiculous. It is easy because the author gives only a few examples. It is ridiculous because these examples cause the big logical problems.
The arguer's conclusion that Monarch Books (MB) should open a cafe to attract more customers is based on a precondition: the cafe really attract more customers. But the author fails to give any examples that the cafe can help attracting more people. Only a sentence "Opening a cafe would clearly attract more customers" makes me feel strange. Where are the examples and reasons? So we can esily imagine that perhaps all customers of MB dislike a cafe because of the awful odor and they prefer to read. So such a "stupid" action can only make more people dislike the MB.
And even the author says above: MB is known for its wide selection for more than twenty years. So I do not know why MB needs to build a cafe to attract more people. Perhaps MB already has so many customers so they do not need more customers because MB is just a little store. Or even perhaps MB has far more customers than Regal Books so a cafe is totally unnecessary. What is more, the author also fails to think about the cost. It is possible that cafe needs a lot of cost which MB cannot pay. So the suggestion that to open a cafe can only be a daydream.
Even if the cafe can attract more customers and better compete with RB, why the children's book section should be discounted? The author gives us a survey which only seems reasonable. The census which concerns the whole nation cannot be convincing. Perhaps the population in Monarch who are under age ten raises every year, so more children are valuable to read books. Or even the census is convincing, more and more children in Monarch like to reading books and MB can attract a large number of kids readers. So we have the reason to believe that children’s book section can attract more customers than the cafe so the cafe should be forgot.
In sum, the author fails to form his/her own logical chain to make us believe a cafe is need in MB. In fact, I believe the author will change his/her mind or reconsider about the conclusion after reading this argument.
