31The following appeared in the editorial section of a newsmagazine.
"Some states are creating new laws that restrict the use of of handheld cell phones by drivers of automobiles. Such legislation, however, is sheer folly. Although some people with cell phones undoubtedly cause problems on the road, including serious accidents, the majority do not. Besides, problems are also caused by drivers who are distracted by any number of other activities, from listening to the radio to disciplining children. Since there is no need to pass legislation restricting these and other such activities, it follows that there is no need to restrict people's freedom to use a device that they find convenient—or helpful in emergencies."
The arguer concludes that restricting laws such as using a cell phone when driving should not be pass by the government. However, the argument is unwarranted and misleading.
First, the arguer points out that no need to restrict people's freedom to use device, which is misleading. Admittedly, people have the right to use devices find convenient, yet this using should not occur in the special time when his carelessness could threaten his and other people's lives. Calling cell phones is the people right, but on driving, this activity truly takes the risk of an accident which could do harm to people's property or even lives. Government should pass the legislation which could protect people from damages or hurts from improper activities from drivers while driving. As a common sense, the law forbidding people driving after drinking, or severely tired, is the same purposes as restricts on calling when driving.
Second, the arguer provide the reasons of listening to radio, disciplining children or other possible activities which are all unfavorable and should be forbidden. The negative effect of the all the distractive activities which should not happen during the driving cannot be the reason for the calling on driving to be permitted.
Third, if the use of cell phones truly causes the accidents, whatever it is the majority should be strictly forbidden by the laws. The government should try to find the main reason for accidents, while any reason of the potential accidents should be researched and prohibited. Among the problems related the lives on the road, there should be serious take care of any problems on the road. Maybe the calling on driving is the minority, but the effects and damage from it is huge and disastrous, which could be beyond the tolerance of any families.
In sum, the freedom and rights could not be the reason to using cell phone when it threatens the driver himself and others lives. And even tough there are many other activities could distract the drivers' attention on road, which should try to prohibited severely, so do the use of cell phone. Moreover, the minority of whole accidents certainly cannon be the reason for the permit of this detrimental activities. |
