105The following appeared in a health newsletter.
"According to a recent study, people with many social ties report catching colds less often than do people with few social ties. Consequently, researchers conclude that having an active social life probably helps strengthen the immune system. The researchers note that catching a cold—one of a family of highly contagious viruses—gives the cold-sufferer temporary immunity to that virus in the future, but not to the many other related viruses. Merely being exposed to a new cold virus, however, is not enough for a person to catch a cold, since a strong immune system can successfully fight off some new viruses. Thus, in order to prevent catching a cold, people should strengthen their immune systems by becoming more active socially."
感觉这篇好乱啊,跟以往的argument的逻辑性似乎不一样,写的有点慌乱,希望狠拍~~ :)
The arguer concluded that to prevent catching a cold, people should strengthen immune systems by becoming more active socially. But there are several fallacies.
First, the arguer suggests more active social ties, based on the recent study, which revealed the less people getting cold than people with few social ties. However, he failed to provide the details of the interviewees. What about the physical condition about the people in different group? how long have this study have been conducted? whether did the two groups in the same area? Ware there some other elements affecting the results, such as the sudden sharp decrease of temperature? Moreover, how far did people with many social ties catching colds less than do people with few social ties? If there are two people catching cold, with three in the other group, then as common sense such result could not get the conclusion that active social ties strengthen the immune system.
Second, If there are some other methods which are more effective and quick than active social ties, why we chose this one? For example, just as the researchers note, injecting the vaccine would more easily than establishing active social ties, and injecting new vaccine could be used to prevent some new viruses. Meanwhile exercises could strengthen both the immune system and physiques, which seams more acceptable than becoming more active.
Third, if merely being exposed to new cold virus is not enough for a person with strong immune system to be cold, then it should be very difficult for the strong immune system to prevent cold, since many related elements with cold is hard to be avoided, such going through a cold day, chilly wind, staying up at night, too much stress. Many elements are proven to be the maybe reason to weaken people's immune system.
In sum, the arguer failed to provide the evidence that could prove the effectiveness and worthiness of the study. To strengthen the argument he would also need to make sure the active ties are benefit to the strength of immune system. Meanwhile he has to explain the effectiveness and worthiness of the importance of active social ties in strengthen immune system. |
