Is it more important for a teacher to help students gain self-confidence than to teach specific knowledge?

Does it mean more important to a teacher to help students get self-confidence than to teach specific knowledge, as the speaker asserts? In a sense, I tend to agree that it is crucial for a teacher to help students gain self-confidence. However, it is unfair to overlook the importance of teaching specific knowledge and give it a second priority. In my point of view, encouraging and teaching students are equal important for a teacher.

Admittedly, teachers are responsible to help student gain self-confidence. In schools, teachers are the ones who contact with students tightly and know students well. They behave not only just as teachers but also the friends of their students. Thus it is obligatory for them to encourage students to gain self-confidence when the students meet difficulties and feel discouraged. Furthermore, the encouragement from their familiar teachers can exert a positive effect greatly on the students to help them retrospect and recover confidence. In this point, it is crucial and necessary for a teacher to encourage the students to gain self-confidence.

Nevertheless, teaching specific knowledge is the job of teachers. As we all know, teachers are defined as a group a people who devote themselves to the education thus teaching are their missions. To some degree, we could say that without teaching knowledge, a teacher could not be entitled as a qualified teacher. Moreover, the quality of teaching is the basic criterion to evaluate teachers' levels. All of these make teaching extremely important for teachers. Therefore, no other tasks could overweight the importance of teaching for teachers.

In a sum, on one hand, teachers are responsible to encourage students to gain self-confidence. On the other hand, it is obligatory for a teacher to teach specific knowledge. Teaching specific knowledge and encouraging to gain self-confidence are equal important and both a teacher's job.
