The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

The arguer thinks that antibiotics do well to patients who suffer from muscle strain. However, from the article, we can not come to the conclusion. There are several holes.

First, the conclusion is based on the precondition that muscle-strain patients are easily to get secondary infected. In order to support his viewpoint, the arguer should offer more information about the probability that secondary infection happen to muscle-strain patients. None but the possibility is high enough, the experiment is significative. Otherwise, it is nonsensical. To our disappointment, we can not get essential information about secondary-infection probability from the arguer.

Second, the experiment is lack of persuasion because there are too many differences between the two groups in experimental conditions. For example, first, the two doctors are so different. It is obvious that a doctor who specializes in sports medicine know more about muscle problems than a general physician. And, the arguer does not tell us exactly the condition of the two groups' members. An important aspect in this is that young people are more likely to recuperate faster than elders.

Third, we are told that the second group took sugar pills instead of antibiotics. But there is no evidence for us to approve that the sugar pills do not influence the recuperation. Maybe sugar pills slow down the recuperation time. Besides, even though it is the antibiotics that quicken the recuperation time, we have to pay great attention to the fact that antibiotics are probable to have side effects. That is really a question.

In a word, in purpose of convincing us that antibiotics should be taken as part of treatment to patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain, the arguer need to offer more data and scientific facts which can answer all of our queries to the conclusion.
