144."It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value."

Only does the artist make something of lasting value to society except the critic? The speaker claims it is true. However, I can not entirely agree with the speaker that the critic accomplishes little lasting value of the society. Artist undoubtedly forms people’s value and idea of society, but it is inappropriate to ignore that the critic actually plays an important role in people’s live.

At the first place, the artist gives something of lasting value to society. The artist creates so many attracting and meaningful works to us that people can enjoy these works to improve his or her level of appreciation, and, the artist brings people to an artistic region, to let them know the real art and feel the spirits of themselves. A famous artist in China says :“Art is one’s soul.” One of the most important roles is to inspirit people to face difficulties bravely. For instance, the famous work Mona Lisa is representative of the artist Vinci, Mona Lisa’s smile makes everyone imagine for many years. Goethe’s Faust which he spent 60 years creating makes lasting influence to society, and it leads people to think the nature of the human beings. What’s more, artist helps people have a correct view to see the society. Through studying the artist’s work, one can have a newly deep thinking to interpret the society on which he or she relies. For example, people can get a deeply knowledge of society after reading the novels of Mark Twain, whose works have the lasting value in society.

At the second place, critic also plays the important role in giving society’s lasting value. Not all values of the artistic works can people get accurately, most of people actually need a guider to lead them to enter the field of the art. Critic just can do this job. Facing one artistic work, critic could tell people what is worthy studying and what is not. Do not all the works have values to cost time to appreciate, people thus need know what true art is. For instance, Saiwantisi’s most popular work Don Quixote at the beginning was regarded as a funny work, however, through the critic’s explanation, this great work eventually is recognized really. Moreover, critic can teach people how to appreciate the artistic work. After all, a few groups of people know art. So it is necessary that critic gives people some methods to evaluate art. And they can point artists’ flows out to help artists improve themselves. If artists can make improvement themselves, they could give better works to people.

Admittedly, there are some potential and unavoidable reasons that critic perhaps could play some negative part in criticizing the artist. Critic easily takes the subjective emotion into the art when he or she criticizes the artist. And, critic also always is influenced by politics. For example, Voltaire does not support Shakespeare’s works because Shakespeare does not conform to neo-classical principles.

To sum up, the speaker oversimplified procedures of creating value. In fact, to lasting value, both artist and critic play the same role in creating. Artist creates values and makes them lasting in society, critic leads people to know the value artist creates and let the value be popular with normal person.
