According to the title statement, the arguer believes that to analyze the trends of the youth is the most effective way to understand contemporary culture. Although there are some of true elements in this statement, I believe, as far as I am concerned, that contemporary culture is complex enough that only through the trends of the young we can not to understand it as quickly and through as we can.
Admittedly, the trends of the young, in some sense, can reflect some facets of contemporary culture. When I talk about this, some examples related to this point come to my mind. in the 1950s, America was in great prosperity but people feel mentally dissatisfied, at this time, Elvis Presly’s rebelling image became the meat and drink to most young people. When the culture emphasized more on hedonism in the 1960s, the youth were crazy in vigorous Beetles. Then many people are laid off in the 1970s, with the youth becoming “an angry generation” and madly clinging to punk music. In the past 50 years, the pop music what youth like is a record for American culture in each period.(这个例子是我从别人那里抄来的,感觉很好的反映了主题,本来想自己举个相似的例子,如中国青年从建国后的价值取向,50年代到西部去,60年代。。。。。。,90年代到沿海去,但我记不清那句话是怎么说的了,就照搬了原文)
But, as I have mentioned, (contemporary culture is a complex compound. It is consisted with many things, say, moral, religion, science, humanities, belief, and behavior and so on.自己把它改成了从句) The trends of the young are only a fraction of contemporary culture which is a complex compound and is consisted with many things, say, moral, religion, science, humanities, belief, and behavior and so on. Obviously we can not teat the young people’s trends as the whole culture, much the same way we should not conclude that all water on the earth is freshwater after we taste water of a river. The young are uncertain and busy in seeking for freedom. Sometimes they may not know what they seek is right or wrong. For example, in 1989 of China there erupted a campaign initiated by college students who hope government to change some of their policies, their goals is right, but are misled by someone that want to overthrow the government. However since it is one of the elements of contemporary culture, it is advisable for us to analysis it carefully for further understanding of contemporary culture.
Furthermore, to understand contemporary culture is not an easy task and there are not, at least it seems to me, a most effective way to understand it. What a person understand is based on his knowledge and experiences. So there are different views to the same thing for different people. More knowledge and experiences you have, deeper can you understand it. Let’s imagine when a boy and his father looks a circle, the boy may say it is sun, apple, football, or some other round shape things, but his father who obviously has more knowledge about it know the circle is a abstract concept which is abstract from all things that have round shape. So as far as the contemporary culture is concerned, if we want to have a further understanding of it, there is no cut-short way. Only to analysis the trends of the young can’t make us have a comprehensive and thorough view to contemporary culture.
From what has been discussed above, we may draw the conclusion that the trends of the young are only a fraction of contemporary culture, and there is not most effective way to understand contemporary culture. For achieving this goal, we should do more learning and do more critical thinking to make us have more and more knowledge and to have our mind became a rich place.
