argument220

The following appeared in an article in a magazine for writers.

"A recent study showed that in describing a typical day's conversation, people make an average of 23 references to watching television and only 1 reference to reading fiction. This result suggests that, compared with the television industry, the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. Therefore, people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media."

------------------------------

WORD: 511                 TIME: 00:34:24                  DATE:2006-11-24

In the argument, the author concludes that people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media. To support this conclusion the author cites the fact that people make an average of 23 references to watching television and only 1 reference to reading fiction in day's conversation. And there is a result suggests that, compared with the television industry, the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. Close examination of this supporting evidence; however, show that the argument contains several factors that are questionable.

The problem of initial stage with this argument is that here is no any data to show the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. And the survey only study in fiction, actually, there are many types in print media, and the fiction is one of them. Even the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability, without excluding other reasons what can increase the profit of television, the author cannot convince me that people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media.

Another fundamental point worth considering is that it is hard to understand this survey in some aspects, compare fiction with television cannot just in such a wide position. As we know that television programs involve various issues, such as daily news, weather reports and lectures or something else, all these things are close to our daily life, so they would be easier to talk about around people. Moreover, we hardly find these factors in fictions, then, people always have no chance to talk in their conversation. Since the author fails to enumerate these and other possible explanations for the common qualities between television and fiction, I cannot agree with any conclusions about people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire more in training and experience in writing for television.

Additionally, if the author can substantiate the assumptions above-mentioned, a final point involves a flaw that the author loses sight of the possibility that television has its own quality rather than fiction. Usually, people can watch the same program at the same time; even they are not stay together. But reading fiction is just individual behavior, so fiction must be less mention in a typical day's conversation than television. Without accounting for other elements that may contribute to the fiction lack of success in getting people's attention, the author cannot justify assertion that people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media.

In conclusion, the argument is logically flawed and the recommendation shows on the basis of the doubtful assumption that renders it unconvincing as it stands. The author should provide direct evidence which shows that television and print media are in the same level. To better evaluate the reliability of the survey upon which need more information about the size and makeup of the survey's data.

感觉语言上写的不太顺~

In the argument, the author concludes that people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media. To support this conclusion the author cites the fact that people make an average of 23 references to watching television and only 1 reference to reading fiction in day's conversation. And there is a result suggests that,(And consequently suggests that ) compared with the television industry, the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. Close examination of this supporting evidence; however, show that the argument contains several factors that are questionable.

The problem of initial stage with this argument is that here is no any (no any?) data to show the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. And the survey only study in fiction, actually, there are many types in print media, and the fiction is one of them. Even the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability, without excluding other reasons what can increase the profit of television, the author cannot convince me that people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media.(这一段说调查不能说明利润下降, 书有很多种类,而且就算出版产业利润下降,电视产业不一定利润上升)

Moreover(However), we hardly find these factors in fictions, then,(therefore) people always have no chance to talk (about fictions)in their conversation. Since the author fails to enumerate these and other possible explanations for the common qualities between television and fiction, I cannot agree with any conclusions about (that) people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire more in training and experience in writing for television.(这一段说调查不好理解,电视范围很广,与生活相关性大,小说则不然,作者没有提供质量方面的信息)

Additionally, if the author can substantiate the assumptions above-mentioned, a final point involves a flaw that the author loses sight of the possibility that television has its own quality (distinctive traits which fictions have not )ratheer than fiction. Usually, people can watch the same program at the same time; even they are not stay together. But reading fiction is just individual behavior, so fiction must be less mention in a typical day's conversation than television. Without accounting for other elements that may contribute to the fiction lack of success in getting people's attention, the author cannot justify assertion that people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media.(电视有自己的特性,人们可以看同一个节目,但看书是个人行为)畅销小说呢?与上段有些重合

In conclusion, the argument is logically flawed and the recommendation shows on the basis of the doubtful assumption that renders it unconvincing as it stands. The author should provide direct evidence which shows that television and print media are in the same level.(什么叫in the same level?) To better evaluate the reliability of the survey upon which need more information about the size and makeup of the survey's data.

感觉结构不是很清晰,段与段有时在论述同一个问题。楼主差不多都可以限时了哦!
