“The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies.”
1.profit maximization is the cheif responsibility of the corporate executives
2.need be constrained, while law is insufficient in doing that
3.moreover, the corporate executives owe their weathy lives to the society
4.the restraints should not go too far
The corporate executives are inherently required to take every strategy to make as much money as possible for their companies by their particular positions in the companies. However, these strategies should be constrained by certain social responsibilities, which do not merely amount to compliance to the law.
No one can deny that executives should make utmost efforts to ensure the profit maximization of their companies, and the reason for doing this can chiefly be stated as: they are corporate executives. Profit maximization is the occupational responsibility of corporate executives, so once people become corporate executives, they are assigned such a responsibility. This is especially true 因为全文的遣词都挺活挺好的,这里的'true'显得不太生动,可以再斟酌 when executives are employed, which is the most common situation in today's society, because the employers who paid the money have the right to get rewarded 这句的解释没怎么看明白,"雇主有得到报赏的权力"?
Yet, because their companies depend on the society to survive and they are social members themselves, the corporate executives should not act without certain social considerations, which do not only mean the law, for the law is insufficient in guiding the behaviors of the corporate executives. It is common sense that the law always lags behind the development of the society. The most common situation 如果能将common替换成prevalence 或general或其他亦可,就不会显得过于重复"common"这个词了 is that it is only when the social problems become severe enough to catch the attention of the public that relative laws will be established. One apt example is pollution. Only when the pollution problems become so severe that they show the potential to threat the very existence of human beings, certain laws are established to prohibit certain industrial behaviors that might lead to pollution of the environment. So if the corporate executives merely act by the law, they might do harm to the society whose results are undesirable even to themselves.
Moreover, although not required by the law, the corporate executives are obliged to take certain approaches to make the world a better place, because of their particular identities and financial abilities. Corporate executives are generally well-paid if they are successful ones. Where do their accomplishments come from? Apparently, it's because of their efficient management of the companies, which can only be achieved with the support of the mass. Thus it is reasonable that the corporate executives owe their wealthy lives to the society, to which they should do something to pay their debts. Some people are astonished when the they heard that Bill Gates donate a large sum of money to the disadvantaged children each year. To the contrary, I am not surprised at all, because in my mind, he is just doing what he should do.
However, we should never go too far to assert that corporate executives should show moral standards as high as that of the communists, who always claim to put the public and the others in a superior situation. Such high moral standards might lead to disastrous results both to the companies and to the public. For example,这个example和先前在B2中提到的例子有点自相矛盾的意味 if one company pays too much attention to the reduction of pollution, it may find it hard to keep its products and services at low prices. The high prices of its products and services can put the customers showing strong desire for its products into great dilemma. Meanwhile, the high prices will lead to a decreasing of the company' customers, which might put the company into financial trouble or even lead to the bankruptcy of that company in the long run.
In sum, though profit maximization is the chief responsibility of the corporate executives, such a responsibility should be restrained by certain social considerations other than the law. However, such restraints should not go too far to do harm to both the customers and the companies.
