----题目----
207"Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."
----正文----
Bride and Gloom always choose their day for the marriage ceremony, Christian puritans go to church each Sunday, and family members hold ritual to memorize the passed away relatives. All these are some part of a culture. We never think of that one day if these ceremonies and rituals disappear, can we identify ourselves then? Some one may believe that the culture would not be altered by the absence of ceremonies so that we still keep our sense about ourselves, while some other people can not agree any more on the former perspective. In my opinion, the answer seems opaque somewhat due to the complication of the question.
Admittedly, ceremonies and rituals are representing a culture of a race or in a region. If the form of culture was lost, the culture can not be expressed directly to some extent, which makes difficulty in people's recognition the old pattern of themselves. That means, ceremonies and rituals are what transmitted from generation to generation, and they are the main mean to let people know who they are as their ancestors. In a high tempo society, people are used to eat fast food rather than making meals and enjoying the process. As a result, the prayer before and after eating is neglected. What is the same, burdensome work causes the prayer before sleeping disappeared as well. With drowsy eyes, people almost sleep at their working desk. These are the situation which leads to the ceremony and ritual's absence, and long time neglect would conduce to a trend of diminished sense of who they were.
However, rituals and ceremonies are some facet of culture which has a complicated definition for lots of experts to research. The greatest Victorian anthropologist Sir Edwards Taylor described culture as "The complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, moral, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society." This means that culture is something growing automatically for human being to accustom to the nature. In this case, rituals and ceremonies in the sense of religious belief can not solely determine the way for people to know themselves.
The most basic approach for self-recognizing is the formal education, which enlightens people and transmits culture as its effect and purpose. All the knowledge taught in the school deeply roots in the youth's minds. I feel so fortune to accept education to tamp a deep and broad basis in order to learn more. Painting, music, history, geography and so forth have no relations with my major now but they are enhancing my quality and let me know the culture of both the past and contemporary society. In short, while transmitting the traditional culture, education is establishing new cultures implicitly at the same time. We would not lose ourselves even though our parents do not tell all the rituals and ceremonies to us while we receiving the systematic education from school.
Moreover, the society is thriving stably with the development of science and technology which also shape the new culture of the society and will be identified by society and groups of people. For example, between 1348 and 1350, The black plague attacked almost the whole Europe, and killed one third of European's population. Nobody known what caused the disaster, and everyone believed that was a punishment of God for sinful behavior. Contrast to Middle Ages, we now can explain that the bacteria cause the plague, and even more we never attribute the unknown to the God’s power, but determine to solve them out. The alteration of the concept equals to the change of culture, new one substitutes the old, advanced one substitutes the uncultured, the true substitutes the false, which uncover the veil that makes us vague to understand who we are.
To sum up, without the ceremonies and rituals, we may lose the traditional shadow of our own, yet the blank would be filled by education which teaches people more than the ceremonies and rituals do. And by the prosperity of science and technology, outdated cultures fade away and advanced cultures are in the center of the stage which let the society and groups of people know themselves more and more transparently just like looking into the mirror, and which will be taught to the next generation and do not make the societies lost the sense of who they are.
