Nowadays, with the rapid-changing technology, intellect including reasoning and other cognitive skills plays a more and more crucial role in the society. However, in my mind, society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect, far beyond the need of development of society.

Actually, most of us do not have a comprehensive understanding towards intellect, since we prefer to pay more attention to the result, rather than the process of work. In school, both the teachers and the students concern about the exam very much, especially in the high school. They spend nearly all their time and energy on how to get a higher mark, and endless exercises and too many classes make up their life. Outside campus, it seems that people have realized the importance of knowledge more than ever before. Indeed, most of the time what they concern are just diplomas, that is the higher the better. Concerning with the real content of intellect, I do not think it can be equal to some knowledge or just the diplomas. Instead we should lay more emphasis on the capacity for rational or intelligent thought, including reasoning ability, capacities of analysis and solving problems and so forth. Unfortunately, most of these important abilities are easy to be overlooked by the society. For example, when looking for jobs, sometimes diploma is more important than those abilities inside, though the later is exactly connected with the intellect. Perhaps those people with high diploma actually do not know how to think by themselves at all. In short, although we have already tried to build a society with people of much knowledge and high accomplishment, we have not lay enough emphasis on those abilities, which concerning about people’s intellect.

The reason why the society does not place enough emphasis on intellect is complex, as follows. First of all, people do not have a right attitude towards intellect. They have not realized that the ability how to look for the problems and then get the answer is more important than the knowledge taught by the teachers. And they concern too much with the result of education, which is mark or diploma, while neglect the real purpose of education. As we all know, the society needs people who know how to think, how to analysis and how to solve problems on their own. Furthermore, sometimes those countries, which are not so rich, may not be able to pay enough attention to the development of intellect. What they should do first is to prevent people from hunger and cold, giving them enough food and clothes. Maybe in these societies, it is impossible for people to consider the problems in the district of intellect. As a consequence, because of the objective reason or the subjective one, the society has not place enough emphasis on the intellect.

Then how to solve this problem? What can the society do and what we can do by ourselves? I think the whole society should attach enough importance to intellect and everyone should do his or her best. Rather than just judge a person by the diploma, we should build a more scientific system for judgment. In school, the teachers should guide students how to think by themselves and train their ability of reasoning and analysis. The process of getting knowledge should be paid more importance than the knowledge itself. In the society, especially when employing workers, the companies should try to find whether this person really has the ability to do the job successfully by himself, instead of high diploma or invitation by some famous one. On addition, the society should try to pay more to the development of education, since it is the base of any other fields. Enough specialists, who know how to develop intellect, and enough money, which used for developing intellect are all largely called for by the society. In short, we should first know what is intellect and then try to develop it.

In a sum, I agree with the issue that the society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect. The right understanding of intellect or the ability of developing it is all we should try to get now. Only when people learn how to think profoundly and analyze detailed by themselves, can we say the society has already succeed in developing the intellect.
