TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

The president conclude that in order to improve the situation when students hunt jobs. their college--Mira Vista College(M), should adopt some tragedy like Green Mountain College(G), by showing some statistics from G and M. At first glance, it seems reasonable. However, with further consideration, we can find that there are many flaws in claim.

In the first place, the president cannot convince us that G's graduates have the advantage in hunting jobs. Only showing the statistics 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors offers from prospective employers in G, the president fails to indicate that G's a great number of graduates get good jobs.  Lack of information of the total number of the seniors, we cannot judge most of them get job. For example, it is possible that a lot of seniors are unble to graduate. In this case, the number of seniors who get jobs are small. And there  still no information about the jobs they got. Perhaps, most of the jobs are not as good as those M's graduates have got. As a result, the president fails to demonstrate that G's students are better than M's.

Additionally, the assumption M's students are worse than G's, made by the president, is weakened by the lack of evidence. Firstly, he or she fails to indicate that the number of seniors who have informed that they have got jobs, cannot stand for the total number of the graduates who get jobs. It is very possible that many of them are not inform to the placement office. In this case, probably there are far more than 70 percent of the graduates in M have got jobs. Secondly, with lack of comparison in taking how long for hunting a job between M's students and G's students. The president cannot make us to believe that most of M's students have more difficulties in finding jobs than G's students. M's students found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, while other college students like G's may even need a longer time to get a job which may just be part-time jobs. Also, perhaps after graduation most of want to have a holiday before getting a job. And If these are true, to the contrary the fact the president has showed may just indicate that M's students are good at hunting a job.

Finally, the suggestion proposed by the president, that offering more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors will improve the abilities of students, is groundless. Although he or she mentions that half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study, it does not necessarily mean that there should provide more courses in M. No evidence shows that M lake of these courses what are relative to the jobs. On the other hand, maybe those seniors have not chosen them and they are more likely to choose the courses that will improve their quality not just for hunting a job. Therefore. to offer more courses may be not necessary. Still no evidence to firm that additional job counselors are needed. Maybe they are useless for a student when hunts for a job.

To sum up, with lack of evidence, most of the president's assumptions are unsubstantial. Having not make sure that these strategies like offering more courses in business, computer technology and hire additional job counselors,  will definately bring benefits to the college, the president' s suggestion seems unfeasible.
