本想下午交作业，但没有写完，只好拖到晚上了。

TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

There is a public controversy about the issue of whether or not reading book is as important as it used to be. Some people contend that the advance in communications technologies enable us learn as much by watching television as we learn by reading books. As far as I am concerned, I disagree with the above viewpoint. Admittedly, TV has immerged into everyone's life for its unquiet advantages; we could not neglect the significant role books have been played in model society.

TV has become the most prevalent media for public to acquire information. In last century,  it is unimaginable for people to  watch  a football game at home ,which is launched in another country . It is also unbelievable to know the instant news from thousands mils away. Thanks to the invention of television, we can receive detailed and living information with graphic and sounds from anywhere of the world. Obviously, TV has brought radical changes to our daily lives.  

Though TV has become a necessarities of our lives, TV could not substitute books, owing to some characteristics. First, it is easily for portable. We can bring a book everywhere and read it conveniently. Secondly, it allows people free their thoughts to soar on the sea of the knowledge. For example, when we read a fiction, we unconsciously imagine ourselves are the characters in the story, and this sense gives us more enjoyment than watching TV, because the latter has offered the solid scenarios for audients. Thirdly, books record most of the historical events and figures.

Since books will not be taken place by the new kinds of media, it is necessary for us to pick up the habit of reading books. Reading books used to be a noble practice in china's cultural tradition. In ancient time, book lovers would " wash hands and burn incense" before opening a newly obtained book. However, people have become less and less interested in reading books. They no longer regarded reading as a way to elevate the soul and sharpen their sight. Instead, they have developed a pragmatic attitude towards reading. Books are merely seen as a tool to acquire the knowledge that might help the readers enroll in a famous university, acquire some skills, find a good job, get promoted in their career or prevail in market competition. It is high time to call for public to correct their attitudes to books.

It is not an easy job to remain a habit of reading books in this fast-food style society. Nevertheless, reading books is such a way allows people acquire enough knowledge, what's more important; it has subtle and imperceptible influence on life.
