147. "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
传统和现代化是水火不容的。人们必须二者选一。
提纲:
1、科技领域传统的东西效率低被现代更高效率的工具取代;
2、文艺领域古典与流行可以共存;
3、有些情况传统的东西失去原来的作用仍然有历史价值需要保留。
Are tradition and modernization incompatible? The speaker claims so, and I partly agree with this view. I concede in some certain realms, there is drastic contradiction between them and human should choose one between them, but in some other realms, they can coexist. Moreover, some traditional things have precious value and we should well preserve them.
On the one hand, consider within the realm of scientific technology, where the efficiency is placed on much emphasis, new inventions which can help human beings improve efficiency will naturally replace the old tools. One should look no further than the change of our conveyances. Hundreds of years ago, most conveyances in use were droved by animals, for example, carriages, which needed horses to pull them. After cars were invented, people tended to choose this newborn conveyance to travel. Today, more and more people prefer planes to cars, trains, and ships moving much slower on the surface of earth when they must take a long distance trip. This track of change taking place in our conveyance clearly shows us that in the realm of scientific technology, tradition and modernization are incompatible, the traditional ones which appear to be behind the times will surly be replaced by the modern ones which make people live and work more efficiently.
On the other hand, in some other realms, for example, the area of arts, there may be no drastic contradiction between the tradition and the modernization. One case in point is about music. Today, many people like listening to popular music which created by their contemporary while there are also many people who prefer to enjoy classical music created by those famous musicians in the past such as Beethoven, Mozart. Another case in point is about the literature, many good works today haven't undermine the great effects of classical works, today, there are still many young people reading works of Shakespeare, Dante. The famous story Troy, which created by Homer, is even made into films that attract many people. In sum, in the area of arts, both traditional works and the modern works can give people so much enjoyment that they can coexist.
Moreover, some traditional things, although they seem to be not useful today, we should also preserve them for they contain precious value. As an illustration, much old and famous architecture such as great wall in China, the Apollo temple in Greece, and pyramids in Egypt, all of which reflected some belief of people lived in the past and contain great historic value. As the result, even they are out of use today; governments in those countries preserved them very well.
In sum, some traditional things related to scientific technology are less useful today than in the past, and they will surly be replaced by the modern ones which make people live and work more efficiently. But those traditional ones related to arts still affect people today and they still exist. In addition, some traditional things contain historic value and should be protected very well by society. |
