Issue130 How children are socialized today determined the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society
翻译:如今儿童如何被社会化决定了社会的命运。不幸的是,我们还没有学会怎样培养出能够建设出一个更好社会的儿童。
In this time of multiform communications and emphasizing team work, there is good sense to agree with the speaker that children's socialization is an essential element to our society's development. However, the author unnecessarily extend this assertion to such a high standard of "determining the destiny of society", while ignore other possible factors that may also greatly influence the society. In this essay, my point of contention with the speaker involves how children’s socialization influences our society and what’s more should be done to our children to bring about a better society.
First of all, an adequate definition of socialization should be conveyed. Basically, socialization is a general term for the many different ways and processes by which children come to be able to function as members of their social community. In this kind of process, children imitate the way adults talk and act, set relationship with their peers and find their own position in the big world. To put it crudely, it is the way and path through which children make themselves a living and try to stand on their own feet in the society.
Yet, my second point of contention with the speaker lies in the very notion "the destiny of society". It is true that how children are socialized today is very important to the future of our society, but not so important to determine the our destiny. To put it another way, numerous factors influence our society's future and socialization is just one essential point of the mass. The development of society needs socialization, but socialization is not the final aim of society’s development. Deep down, something more important determine our destiny, which is the purpose of our efforts, including worldwide peace, respect of the weak, preserving the natural and anything that serves to constructing a better and healthy psychological world of ourselves, while socialization is just a footstone of those purposes.
When it comes to how to raise our children for those purposes, in other words, to bring about a better society, we still have much more work to do. Our education now has already put a lot of attention on children's socialization. One apt illustration comes as more and more parents come to realize it is very important to develop children’s independent ability. In homes, they want their children to do the housework of their own, let children communicate with the neighbors or strangers by themselves. In schools, teachers encourage students to make new friends and to tackle the relationship by themselves. When step into society, an elderly child is often regarded as an independent individual but with more care to him/her. All these above are vivid manifestations that children are socialized, at least, quite adequate in today’s society, except for those abnormal.
On the other hand, however, few things have been done to care about children’s attitudes to the value of human life. Many children studied for dozens of years, learned trucks of knowledge on both science and technology, but at last they just don't know why they should learn all of these. As they go further, some lost their ways in the complicated human relationship, while others try to suicide with the status of a millionaire. We can not deny the fact that many of them are very successful to some extent and fully emerged into the society but still, they fail to learn the value of human life.
To be sure, we should continue to develop our positive ways of children's socialization, which is most likely to yield advances and discoveries that serves our society. The chief point is, in the mean time, we should not lose sight of fact that to teach them the value of human life is something more important.
