47
"Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect—thatis, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
3.Webster对intellect的解释:a : the power of knowing as distinguished from the power to feel andto will : the capacity forknowledge b : the capacity for rationalor intelligent thought especially when highly developed
知识分子intellectual, the intelligentsia, professional(s), professional menand women,科学家?
灌输:engraft;indoctrinate;
Whilethe emotions and passions that bring people happiness and pleasure areindispensable in the construction of the well-being of the society, intellect, whichis the prerequisite of normal operating of the society, is of more importanceand should be placed more emphasis. However, consider various aspects of the society,I agree with the speaker that society does not regard intellect enough.
Onereason that I hold the view that intellect is more essential than emotion isthat intellectual power is the groundwork of the society and emotion serves nouseful purpose without intellect. The problem concerning true and false, whichbelongs to the category of intellect, cannot be solved by emotions andsensations. What I am against is not normal emotions but the emotion along withthe absence of intellect and goodness regardless of right and wrong. Seriouslythinking and reasoning and correctly distinguishing right and wrong are thebase of a society.
Anotherreason that I agree that society should place more attention to intellect isthat intellectual ability is also significant for individuals, because of notonly the knowledge that we acquire by intellect power but also the rationalityconcerning intellect. Human beings’ emotional vulnerability is like a riskyriver which might overflow at any moment and cannot be controlled but bywisdom.
Inmy observation, however, our society seems not to emphasize intellectadequately. The education for children and teenagers, for example, lack thecultivating of intellectual ability. Most of the teachers inform the studentsof knowledge through engrafting and indoctrinating at the expense of students’thinking and reasoning independently. As to the students, just like the wordsof Russell, “Passive acceptance of the teacher’s wisdom is easy to most boys andgirls. It involves no effort of independent thought, and seems rational becausethe teacher knows more than his pupils; it is moreover the way to win thefavour of the teacher unless he is a very exceptional man. Yet the habit ofpassive acceptance is a disastrous one in later life. It causes man to seek andto accept a leader, and to accept as a leader whoever is established in thatposition.” The system of examination also possesses flaws: the students whoscore highly in the exams are the ones who have good memory and familiarity withthe exams instead who have correct understanding of the discipline. As aresult, only the ones those possess “the ability for exams” have theopportunities to go to universities and colleges.
Inaddition, the social medium, which always reflects the public attentions, seemsto overlook the intellect power and intellectuals. In the intelligentsia ofChina, the most attention-getting people, nevertheless possess the love andesteem, often lack the intellectual ability and the charm always comes from themoral passion, verbal pomposity and a little pretty trick. In the absence ofintellect, we would be risking a crazy society.
Insum, while the emotion is essential in the construction of the well-being ofthe society, the intellect is the groundwork of the normal operating of thatsociety, thus we should pay enough attention. However, our society seems failto do this. |
