TOPIC: ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

The author recommends that they should give Professor Thomas a promotion and a raise in her salaries due to several reasons. However, I find some logical flaws in the argument which render it unconvincing.
First of all, the fact that Professor Thomas' classes are of the largest at the university is no indication that she is popular with students. It is entirely possible that the students are obliged to  learn the subject or they will have trouble in graduating from the university and actually they do not enjoyProfessor Thomas' lessons at all. Therefore, the mere fact that she is popular among students is dubious.
Secondly, according to the author, Professor Thomas has brought to the university in research grants large amounts of money which is even more than her own salary in the last two yeas. However, the author fails to offer any evidence to substantiate that this will continue in the future. Perhaps Professor Thomas made a research which is attractive to enterprises in the past two years but it does not indicate that her next researches will also bring benefits. Consequently, the fund she has brought to the university in the last two years in little indication that she is well worth of a promotion and a raise in salary.
Thirdly, even if I concede that Professor Thomas' teaching and research abilities are excellent, the author has not provided any evidence that she will also be a good chairperson of the department. Maybe she is only good at doing research and giving lessons and has little knowlege in how to manage a department.
Fourthly, the author assumed that if Professor Thomas is given the promotion and the raise in salary, she will not leave their university for another college, which is not convincing. Maybe other colleges will give her better research environment and facilities, which are more attrctive to her. What's more, the argument even has not offered any information that Professor Thomas intends to leave their university. Perhaps she does not care about salary and promotion at all. If this is the case, the author's recommendation is not necessary.
In conclusion, the argument lacks many evidence to substantiate the author's recommendation. To better bolster it , the author should offer further information that Professor Thomas has intended to leave the university because of her discontent with current position and salary. Also, the author has to prove that Professor Thomas is well worth of the raise of salary and promotion. What's more, the author must make it clear that if they have realized these conditions, Professor Thomas will not leave their school any more.
